Bosch & Tankless LP Hot Water Heater Logo
Posted on Feb 13, 2011

I have a PowerStar model #44-557701 tankless hot water heater. When you turn on the hot water it starts to heat and then it just shuts off. My dad thinks it might have something to do with the flow sensor. Could this be the source of my problem? It is a year old now.

When deliming (decalcifying) you should do it more than once a year. It depends on the calcium content of your water source if you can stretch it to a year.

Mine is an AE125 electricalIy powered one that I do once every 3-4 months, it's a bit of a pain in the backside but if you don't & you have high calcium content in your water supply, the heater coil will become encased in calcium causing the coil to become overheated due to electrical demand overload, this overheating will cause a ground short from the wire inside the copper coil to the copper coil itself inside the canister & blow a hole in the coil thus causing the electrical conducting wire to come into contact with the water inside the canister (ground short).

You know the heater coil has failed when the circuit breaker on the top of the canister keeps tripping every few minutes after resetting. If yours is the dual canister type heater, the problem will only arise with the leftside canister, the rightside canister never gets hot enough to heat water above the boiling point to create calcium deposition on the coil.

I saw a schematic for pumping a deliming solution into the canisters, don't do this, you have no way of knowing if the calcium has been completely dissolved from the coil. This must be visually inspected because decalcifying a badly encrusted coil can take a full day's worth of time & you need to be able to visualize the process. You must remove the coil from the canister, doing this is another story all in itself, I've done it many times.

Call Bosch. And exercise your 10 year parts warranty rights.
Copy following link for Bosch power star manuals:

Check circuit breakers, fully off and then fully back on. Test if voltage is at least 80% rating plate on unit. Check that temperature dial is set correctly. Call for service again.
Don't install tankless computer that heats water. You cannot fix this computer yourself, and they are problematic for owners.
Go to Lowes right now, spend $285 and buy tank-type electric water heater, roll it into your house, and save money, since the electric tankless computer heater costs average $100 more per year to operate than tank-type heater for average family of 4.
Tank type heater can be repaired by homeowner same day for $25 using off-the-shelf parts from hardware store. And that empowers the regular guy, and gets you off the junk tankless treadmill.

Question posted under Bosch tankless.
Question says 'tank'
Brand, model, and type heater unknown.
Elements mean electric.
'Thermal cutout pops when taking shower produces cold water' indicates tankless, since tank-type would maintain some hot water.
No error code might indicate tank-type.
Add a comment with type, brand and model number of heater for possible assistance.

Electric bill doubled last month, and we've had the Powerstar AE125 tankless electric for over a year. There are no leaky faucets.

There are a lot of other things that eat electricity. Like space heater and using ovens for heat. Heat pump.Central heat fan running all the time. House lights left on. Outside flood lights. Clothes washer using HOT water. Look around real good. It all adds up. Also the power co. may be charging more for "fuel" costs surcharges. Here in GA I'm paying a bit more now to pay for a nuclear power plant.

Ok, sounds like a flow sensor issue, is your house water pressure steady or does it fluctuate? The sensors on these seem to be a common issue and this model has many issues with heating. take care

No hot water!!!!!

It is difficult to diagnose tankless water heaters remotely since there are so many variables to take into account. It might be helpful to check the troubleshooting information on your model at boschhotwater to see if a handy solution is available before calling out a service tech. There are PDF's viewable with more detailed information on troubleshooting (flow rate, power supply, inlet temp, graphics, etc.) and they have a tech support phone # which is very helpful.
If the light is on and you still don't have hot water, I would start by checking the thermal cutouts (breakers) on top of each heating module that could be tripped and need reset.

I can attempt to post walk-through if needed.
