Volume Control - The volume icon does not appear in the notification area (system tray)
Go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices.
On the Volume Tab under Device Volume, put a check in the box that reads: Place volume icon in the taskbar.(Classic View)

If that has been tried:
Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32 (X- is your CD location)
Once done: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll

My volume icon on the task bar has disappeared, how do I get it back

Open the TASK MANAGER, open the PROCESSES tab, highlight "explorer.exe", click on "end process", Open "file", "New Task", Type "explorer" without quotation marks. OR Control Panel, Sound, depending on your OS, You will find a box to show tray icon. If it is checked, uncheck, apply, then check, apply. The Task Manager will remove stored icons that fill the program, and restart the icons.

ACER ASPIRE 3000

Left click the volume icon in the system tray in windows.

A slider will appear which you can drag up and down to change the volume on the computer.

If the volume icon is not in the system tray, do this:

Go to Start->Control Panel
Pick Sounds and Audio Devices
Open the Volume tab
Tick "Place volume icon in taskbar"

Now you should have an icon in the taskbar.

If you cannot do this, then you do not have the proper sound card drivers installed and you computer will be playing no sound whatsoever, which is unrelated to your question.
