You have announce set on, so callers can hear your message but cannot leave one of their own.

To change this, follow the instructions on page 28 of the manual at

Your answering machine is in announce mode, where it plays an outgoing announcement but will not record any messages. To change it, press MENU until the system announces "Set announce only." Press CHANGE until the system announces "Off."

can't get the v tech 5877 to record a message

You have the answering machine set to announce only.

Press the menu button repeatedly until you hear the phone say "set announce only" Press the change button twice The first time tells you the current setting which is "on" the second time turns it off.

I HAVE A VTECH PHONE AND LOST POWER TO IT. AND I'M TRYING TO SET THE ANSWERING MACHINE UP, I CAN'T FIND THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET AND I CAN'T FIND IT ON THE INTERNET. I HAVE A 5.8GHZ VTECH MODEL IA5874 VTC-IA5874-R. I KEEP GETTING THE LETTER (A) ON THE BASE PHONE AND IT WILL NOT RECORD ANY MESSAGES THAT ARE LEFT. I DID WHAT THE MENU SAID TO DO BUT STILL WONT RECORD ANY MESSAGES, NEED HELP TO WHERE I CAN FIND THE INSTRUCTION BOOK OR HOW TO FIX IT. THANK YOU
