Here is a link to your microwave's Online User Manual in case you don't have it already:
http://www.emersonelectronics.ca/emerson/documents/MW8992RD%20-%2009%20Cubic%20Ft%20900%20Watt%20Microwave%20Ovenmanual.pdf
On page 13 of the above manual you will find instructions on how to deactivate the child lock in case that was the problem.
Basically you just hold down the STOP/CANCEL button for 3 seconds.
If it is not that then you might be looking at some kind of power supply circuit board or control circuit board failure and some significant disassembly since I don't believe there is an easily accessible fuse you can replace in the unit.
Good luck and I hope this was at least a little helpful.
Joe.
Oh well, I'm sorry it wasn't something simple like that.
I assume the warranty is expired since you bought it 2 years ago so you probably can't return it.
Does the microwave have any lights / display / beep sounds at all when you plug it in and push buttons? Because I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say "the bulb is fused".
Do you mean the light bulb inside the cooking area that lights up when you open the door or start cooking? Or do you mean something inside the display unit? If you mean just the light bulb, then yes it can be replaced by the average home owner with some minor disassembly work. Obviously there are some safety precautions to take before any kind of maintenance is done such as unplugging the unit and leaving it unplugged for at least a few hours before removing any panels. There is a capacitor inside the unit that must be allowed time to discharge before working inside the unit. I do not have the complete Service Manual for your model but most microwaves have the same general layout of components. Just remove all the visible screws that hold the exterior casing on, there should only be a few on either side. Then lift off the casing and set it aside. If it doesn't come right off with just a bit of wiggling, make sure you haven't missed any screws in the back or the bottom. You should now see and have access to the light bulb and fixture on the upper right hand side. If the bulb still looks good you might want to use clean rubber / latex gloves to remove it in case it is still good since the oil from your hands can get on the surface of the bulb and reduce its life expectancy significantly. You should be able to tell by looking at it if it is burnt out or not and if it is obviously cooked then don't bother with the gloves (use them for the new bulb though). You can remove the light bulb by either just unscrewing it or pushing it in and then turning. If it's dead, then just take it to your local hardware store or appliance dealer and get a suitable replacement. Remember while you have the cover off to do a detailed visual inspection of all the other wiring / components in the microwave. If you see any loose or frayed wires or especially any black scorch marks anywhere, take note of them and report back. Otherwise just replace the bulb, then the cover and try it again. Obviously do not try to turn on the microwave with the cover removed unless you want a really quick suntan (just joking). If it is not the light bulb or an obvious loose / broken wire then it is probably a faulty MAGNETRON which is often not economically feasible to replace and it would just be time for a new microwave. Good luck with that guys, work safely and I hope you solve it. If you need further assistance just comment back here and I will try my best to help. Take care.------------Joe.
Oh yeah, while you have the cover off, check if you can see any kind of wiring harness coming from the display unit and plugging into another circuit board with a multipin connector. Try unclipping and gently pulling out the connector from the board and then reseating it in case it was just a bad connection. Also look out for any little cylindrical glass/metal fuses that might be inside the case on the power supply circuit board and check them for continuity with a multimeter if you have one.
No problem Preeti, I enjoy helping folks fix stuff themselves. I hate to see something get tossed when it might be fixed up with just a little tinkering. Sometimes the machines are too far gone and it can't be helped, but even then hopefully the effort / experience was worthwhile, educational and maybe even a little fun. Best of luck and thank you for your comments, I greatly appreciate the ThumbsUp.---------Joe.
If this was at all helpful, please click on the 4 Thumbs Up rating icon above. Thank you.
Sorry that we couldn't find a fix to revive the old girl. It happens. I can't be brilliant EVERY day. It was a pleasure trying anyway. Oh, and just so you know in case you ever use FixYa again (hopefully), if you don't rate a solution with the 4 Thumbs Up rating scale icon, then the person providing it does not get credited for helping you at all. I don't mean necessarily for this time since we couldn't solve it, but certainly for next time if a solution proves helpful. Take care you guys. -------------Joe

Hello Joe:
Thank you so much for your response, and as it happens, we checked the manual and
My husband did do the Unlock Child Lock business but it still did not work. The bulb inside seems to have fused....is that repairable at home, or should we just go and buy another Microwave?
Is there any other solution you can provide - like opening up the back panel and trying to work at something?.....Or is that not a viable option?
Would greatly appreciate your help!
Thanks and our best -
Preeti
DEAR JOE!!
ARE YOU A WONDERWHIZ OR WHAT? I cannot believe you wrote out all that just for us!!
Sorry I didn't clarify that it was not just the light bulb that seemed blown but there are no lights at all on the face or inside of the m/w. Maybe it is totally kaputt. However, ------
We are going to try out your instructions and see if they work - and let you know in a maybe an hour or so as to how it goes....if nothing works, we shall have to go and replace it with a new unit.
Meanwhile, give us some time, and let's see if we can make a go of it somehow.....but both my husband and I wish to THANK YOU PROFUSELY FOR YOUR INPUT AND TIME YOU TOOK TO HELP AND HOPEFULLY SOMETHING COMES OF IT.
Will let you know soon one way or the other. Until then, our best to you and warm regards,
Thank you
Preeti
