Sounds loike its running lean, start by replacing the fuel filter on the end of the pipe in the fuel tank, if this does not help you need to richen up the mixture screws, unfortunayly you need a special toll to adjust the screws ( they have a spline, not a screwdriver slot ) the tool is part no. 530035560, once you have the tool unscrew the carb screws 1/2 turn on each and try again.

What is vapor locking?what causes it?

I don't think your problem is vapor lock. Your machine is just starving for fuel. Your problem can be solved by removing and cleaning your carburetor, changing the gaskets, changing filter , and checking for bad fuel lines. Your problem is very common. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

Will not start have checked fuel lines ok,cleaned spark plug ok,checked wires all checked ok,saw eas running fine shut off to change chain and refuel and would not start after

Just check that it has not picked up on the piston, remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston through the exhaust port, any sign of scuffing and the saw will need to come apart for further investigation.

My poulan saw keeps stalling and has no power

Check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for clogging. Check the fuel lines for condition. The carburetor may need cleaning and re-kit. Make sure the chain is being properly oiled and sharpened. Good luck!

I neen repair manual for a Poulan Pro SM4218AV.

Hi Lou; great name.
What are you trying to repair? The correct IPL and some thought works for most things.
Poulan "PP4218AV Type 2" IPL follows (may not be your saw):
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP4218AV-Gas-Saw-Type-2/75.PP4218AV-Gas-Saw-Type-2.1.59.1.html

If this is not your saw you can find the correct one here:
Poulan.com

The dash number of your serial number is the type.

Make sure the chain brake is not engaged.Pull it toward the handle until it latches. Also check for sawdust under the chain sprocket cover.Adjust the chain to remove slack but make sure you can still move it by hand.

Chain slips off bar

I would suggest adjusting the tension and cleaning and debris along the chain path (guide bar).

Here's the manual for Poulan PP4218AV =>

http://72.3.225.179/manuals/165555e.pdf

Look at page 6-7 for instructions to adjust the chain tension and page 16 for cleaning the guide bar.
