  • Turn off the power to the receptacle that will be replaced by switching off the circuit breaker in the fuse box. Check that the battery is good in a circuit tester. If not, replace the battery. Place the tester's two ends in one set of the receptacle's slots, then the other set. The light on the tester should not come on. If it does, the correct circuit breaker has not been switched off.

  • 2

Take off the receptacle's face plate by first removing its screw. Detach the two screw securing the receptacle to the box and pull out the receptacle. Loosen the receptacle's terminal screws and pull away all wires from the back of the receptacle. Take out the receptacle (if working properly, it can be reused). If the ends of the wires are chewed up after removing them from the existing receptacle, cut them off with wire cutters. Strip off 1/2 an inch of insulation from the ends, using wire strippers. Bend them into loops with the pliers.

  • 3

Bend the copper ends of all wires into a loop, using a pliers. Connect the white wires to the silver terminal and tighten the screw to the wires. Connect the black wires to the gold terminal and tighten the screw to the wires. Connect the bare ground wires to the ground terminal and tighten the screw to the wires.

  • 4

Push all cables into the back of the box, followed by the receptacle. Attach the receptacle to the box with the two screws. Hold the new faceplate in position and install the screw. Turn on the power at the circuit breaker.

    Hi,
Two wires coming out from the wall is the line 1 and line 2 from the breaker box. If you wan't to power on the outlet through the switch here are the steps. Connect line 1 to the outlet directly, and line 2 to the switch. Get one spare wire to jump the open slot from the outlet and switch and you're done.
    Hope I help you.
    Have a nice day!

Testing household outlets with 3 light tester

Have you tried to determine if the problem outlets might be controlled by a wall-switch? This could be the case if separate black wires coming into the box are being used for the different outlets.

Wall light switch timer inline with Extension cord GE 15313

Black to black (hot), Green to green (ground) and the only one left is of course white to blue. The (neutral) white wire can be many different flavors (blue, red, orange, brown, etc.).

If the outlet your plugging into (or controlled by the service panel breaker) is 15 Amps use a minimum of 14 gage wire (or 12 gage is even better), if its a 20 Amp outlet use 12 gage wires (or 10 gage). Don't use a 16 or 18 gage wire because it may get hot and start a fire because its undersize for the Amps.

I have three wires, two are black and one is white. I want to have the outlet active and the switch control an overhead light. How do I connect the wires?

Connect the white on the switch to the white in your house, one black to the hot coming in, and the other black to the hot wire to the overhead fixture.

I have an outlet that I want to convert to a light switch and an outlet on the T5625. I can not get the light switch to work. I have a Black hot and neutral with a grond. how do I hook up ht light portion?

    Electrical devices have color-coded screws.

    Electricians don't guess, they test.
    You have tested the wires.

    1) Combo switch-outlet device screws are dark - brass - silver - green
    Hot to dark
    Neutral to silver
Load wire (wire that goes to light, fan, motor) to brass
    Bare ground to green screw

    2) If you want switch to control the outlet on the combo device.
-Device must have 2 dark screws
-Look at dark screws, there is a break-away fin that connects dark screws.
    -Remove break-away fin.
--Now there is one dark screw for the switch part of device, and one dark screw for outlet part.
    -Connect Hot to dark-for-switch.
-Run jumper wire from brass screw to dark-for-outlet.
    -Neutral to silver
-Switch on combo device will operate outlet on combo device

I just bought a switch to control both fan speed and light control (dual switch) i hooked it up every thing worked fine. then to realize that the outlets that follow dont work. just as a clue on the...

The key seems to be that you changed wiring in the ceiling box.

I suggest you make a drawing of the wires before and after. Track the route that the Hot wire takes.

The key question is this: Does Hot wire from breaker box arrive in the ceiling box first? Or does it arrive in wall box first?

I think Hot from breaker arrives in wall box first. And from there Hot wire goes to ceiling box ... and from ceiling box the hot wire goes to other plugs in room. If this is true, you will be one wire short for installing fan control switch.

I always make a drawing of existing wires before starting, so I can put it back the way it was. It sounds like you got a good handle on which wire goes where.

We used to solve the one-wire-short problem by making a simple project bigger. Figure out which direction ceiling joist run. See if you can slide fish line from fan ceiling box over to wall. If that works. Over at the wall, chop small hole in ceiling so you can feed wire up to fish line. Pull wire over to ceiling box. Next, staple other end of wire along ceiling over to location above wall box. Chop another small hole so you can feed wire down to wall box. And then install beautiful crown molding to hide the mess, and paint the room so you need new furniture.

I have a Leviton 5625 (rocker switch and outlet) and am trying to replace an existing light switch with it. I have a black and white wire tied to the top and bottom left screws, respectively, in the...

Ok - you have to figure out which two wires are supplying the power. Then which wires go to the outlet. Then the last wires should go to the light. Connect all the white wires together. then the black from the power cable goes to the black of the outlet. Add a short wire to the black group and put it to one side of the switch. put the black wire from the light cable to the other side of the switch.

Wiring a leviton 5625-W switch receptacle combination

You cannot replace the switch with a switch/receptacle combo because there is no neutral wire. The black and white that you see are both used as hot wires. One is the Line and the other is the Load.

You have to install another 2 wire cable or replace the existing with a 3-wire cable. A 3-wire cable has a black, red, and white, plus the bare ground wire

    Open wire...either ground or neutral.

Lights are 110volt...and possibly there is a disabling feature due to open wire, as stated above, not allowing oven to operate.

When ground and/or neutral are provided all should work.
