My new Tom Tom will not start past the first screen that shows the name Tom Tom.....how do I get it to operate properly. If I depress the start button for about 14 seconds it goes to a green screen or shuts off.

It is likely that your battery is low or nearly-dead, particularly if you haven't used your GPS for a while and it has not been plugged in (to be kept charged). That's why it doesn't start (even if it is plugged in when you're trying to start it up again now). Don't try to repeat the startup (too often) as it will mess up your sw / data (when your battery is low or half dead) You'll want to plug it in (e.g. using your USB or wall adapter) for up to 24 hours or so, to charge the battery. Then start it up and keep it plugged in until your battery is fully charged.

My tom tom one when i swith on the screen shows the sd card being removed from tom tom with a red cross across sd card.the sd card is in side .i can not past this screen or use gps how do i fix thanks

It is likely that the SD card (data) is corrupted. I'm assuming that it had previously worked properly.
Have you tried running a (fix) disk utility against your (internal disk or SD card) storage for the GPS ?
For instance, connect the GPS to your PC (Windows), and select (highlight) the (internal) "disk" on the GPS device. Under File - Properties, go to the Tools (tab) and run the "Error-Checking" option.
This utility may fix your data error.
If not, consider doing a restore (from backup) of your GPS disk storage.

Our Tom Tom was working well until we shut it down. Now we cannot get past the introductory page and when we press continue it flickers but does not progress any further

Do not panic when your devices start to malfunction, it is just a minor problem that can be fixed easily. The reason it does not get pass the introductory page is because a file that supports its operation is missing.
What you have to do is to reset your device using a computer. Data transfer might not work properly if the connection to your computer is through a USB hub or keyboard.
  1. Reset your navigation device by holding the power button for about 15 seconds, then it restarts itself.
  2. Connect your navigation device to your computer, then switch on your device.
  3. Tom tom home starts, is the page you first get.
  4. If home offers new application, click 'back',
  5. Delete the tom tom application from your device and computer by clicking 'manage my navigation device',
  6. Reinstall the application by clicking 'update my device',
  7. Safely disconnect your device.
If the device still does not get passed the introductory page then you need to try backing up and restoring your device.
That should do the job.

Screen stuck on tom tom with red hands

Remove the SD card
The card needs to be formatted properly first that's all,

formatting is better done in a card reader.

Right click on it and select format select FAT32 as the files system

Now connect the tomtom but don't let tomtom home run. exit TTH if need be.

You now ned to select your tom tom which will also show as a drive.

In windows explorer select tools then folder options. Click view and tick the box for "show hidden files and folders"
It may warn you but you can ignore it.

Then just copy ALL the files from the tom tom to your sd card

DO NOT USE CUT AND PASTE !

Once all the files are on switch off the tom tom and insert the sd card

It should now work

If you are talking about the Main Menu that shows only 5 icons, tap change preferences, then show all menu options. From there you will see all the icons and menus that are available for your One. Thanks for using Fixya!
