Check if the base power adapter is warm to the touch. If it's cold, then the base has no power. Test if distance between the handsets and the base is an issue by moving closer to the base. Check for any radio interference. Check if the handsets are registered. You may need to de-register them first. Try unplugging the base (power and phone line cord) then remove the batteries from each handset. Wait at least 15 minutes before restoring the power/batteries. If the base has a charging cradle, place one handset in that cradle and wait a few minutes. See if that handset works. Otherwise, try to register one of the handsets and see if it works.
If the problem persists, then the base probably has a problem transmitting or receiving the signals from the handsets. Unless the system is under warranty (one year), you should replace the system. Otherwise, contact Uniden customer support.
I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the model of the Uniden phone if you want directions for registering/de-registering the handsets.
This could be due to the fact that one of your phones is off the hook or unplugged. Check and make sure that all devices are operational and charged.. Don't forget to check the phone line itseft.
Cheers
Unplug the battery in the handset, unplug the phone line from the base and unplug the electricity from the base. Leave everything unplugged for an hour or two instead of a couple to five minutes. That way you can get more of an idea of whether your phone will work. After an hour or two plug in everything. If resetting the phone doesn't work then try the next step.
Check the surge protector:
Is the phone line plugged into a surge protector? The surge protector may have stopped working or blown a surge, a sudden burst of electricity, which may have caused the dial tone in your cordless phone to go. Unplug the phone line from the surge protector then plug it back in and see if you get a dial tone. It could be that the phone line plugged into the surge was loose or not plugged in securely.
Try a different phone plug, outlet.
Check the base:
Is the base dusty and have possible dirt in the prongs where the phone sits? Lift the base and blow off dust.
Check the handset for dirt.
Rub metal connections on handset and base:
Use a pen cap or coin and rub the metal connections on the bottom of the handset. Rub the prongs, metal connections on base.

here are some tips from my manual for out of range problems hope they help • Only one handset can be used to make or answer a call anytime. If another handset attempt to do so, the screen will display OTHER HANDSET ON and then OR OUT OF RANGE. You might press PHONE or SPEAKER again until no other handset is using the line. Use the call transfer feature to transfer a call to another system handset or use the speakerphone feature so multiple members of your house can be on an active call at the same time. • Move the cordless handset closer to the base. You might have moved out of range. • Ensure that the base is powered up. • Place the cordless handset in base cradle for 1 minute to allow the cordless handset and base to resynchronize channels. • If the cordless handset is in its base and the charging light does not come on, refer to the charge light is off in troubleshooting guide. • Reset the base. Unplug the unit’s electrical power. Wait for 15 seconds then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and base to reset. • Other electronic products can cause interference with your cordless phone. Try installing your phone as far away from these types of elec tronic devices as possible: wireless routers, radios, radio towers, page towers, cell phones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, personal computers, kitchen appliances and cordless phones.
I unplugged the base unit and took a battery out of the handset. I then put the battery back in the handset and replugged the base unit. This corrected the problem.
The handsets are reading out of range because they have lost connection with the base. This happens mostly during peak power demands or power outages, but can also happen when the phone is unplugged for any amount of time. This can also cause, at times, the answering machine to stop picking up calls. To remedy this issue, reset the phone system. Please follow the instructions below:
To reset the phone: 1. Disconnect the power adapter, phone line, and remove all batteries from the base and all handsets. Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds to reset the base.
2. Place the batteries in the handsets first and then plug in the power adapter and phone line. Do not place the batteries back in the base yet.
3. Put the handset in the charge cradle.
4. It may take up to 1 minute for the "Out of Range" to clear from the display.
5. Once the "Out of Range" is cleared from the handset place the back up batteries back into the base.
Pick up the handset from the base. Press and hold [find handset] on the base.
While holding [find handset], place the handset in the base. The charge/in use LED on the base begins to flash, indicating the base is registering the handset. Wait for at least five seconds.
Pick up the handset from the base and press [talk/flash]. If the display shows TALK, the handset is registered. If not, place the handset in the base to try again.
Press [end].
Place the next handset in the base and wait for at least five seconds. No need to hold [find handset] this time.
Repeat steps 3 - with any other handsets you have.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
I think this may be the answer. With multiple handsets reading "Please register" and a "working" base station (w ith dial tone). If you bring the remote units to the base station and place them on hte base, they will register and stay registered after you return them to the remote base. It doesn't say this anywhere in the instructions as it gives you the impression the remotes will register from their own base.
