Setup your Xbox to a Wireless Network

Xbox game consoles can be connected <span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span> to a router<a href="http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/routers/g/bldef_router.htm"></a> for wireless access to the Internet and Xbox Live. Follow these instructions to set up the Xbox or Xbox 360 connections to a wireless home network.<br /><br /> <ol> <li>Connect the appropriate wireless network adapter<a href="http://compnetworking.about.com/od/hardwarenetworkgear/g/bldef_adapter.htm"></a> to the console. On the Xbox, a Wi-Fi adapter that connects to the Ethernet sometimes also called a wireless network bridge must be used. Alternatively, the Xbox 360 is also designed to work with certain Wi-Fi <i>game adapters</i> that connect to a USB port.<br /><br /></li> <li>Turn on the console and navigate to the wireless settings screen. On the Xbox, the menu path is "Settings -&gt; Network Settings -&gt; Advanced -&gt; Wireless -&gt; Settings" On the Xbox 360, the menu path is "System -&gt; Network Settings -&gt; Edit Settings."<br /><br /></li> <li>Set the SSID (network name) on the Xbox to match that of the wireless router. If your wireless router has enabled SSID broadcast, the SSID name should appear pre-selected on the Xbox display. Otherwise, select the "Specify Unlisted Network" option and enter the SSID there.<br /><br /></li> <li>Specify "Infrastructure" as the Network Mode. (Infrastructure is the mode used by wireless routers.)<br /><br /></li> <li>Set the Security Type to match that of the wireless router. If your router uses WPA encryption and the type of adapter connected to the Xbox does not support WPA, you will need to change your router settings to use WEP encryption instead. Note that the standard MS Xbox Adapter supports WPA while the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740) only supports WEP.<br /></li> <li>Save your settings and verify the network is functional.<br /><br /> On the Xbox, the Wireless Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made with the wireless router, and the Connect Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made through the Internet to Xbox Live.<br /><br /> On the Xbox 360, use the "Test Xbox Live Connection" option instead.</li></ol> Tips: <ol> <li>Even when your wireless connection between the Xbox and the router is working perfectly, you may still experience difficulty connecting to Xbox Live. These issues can be caused by the quality of your Internet connection or the firewall and Network Address Translation (NAT) settings of your wireless router. Additional troubleshooting may be required in these areas to achieve reliable Xbox Live connections.</li></ol><span style="font-weight: bold;">Troubleshooting</span><br /><br /> The built-in diagnostic of the Xbox can help with any falure.Navigate to the <i>System</i> area of the Xbox Dashboard, select the <i>Network Settings</i> menu option, then select <i>Test Xbox Live Connection</i> to run the test at any time. If your wireless router is not near your console, you may get a better wireless signal by using a wireless networking adapter. My x box 360 keeps freezing ans saying you are disconnected from xbox live, what do i do ?

If your screen freezes when playing on Xbox LIVE, the problem may be related to your Internet connection. A weak wireless signal can cause poor Xbox LIVE performance. If you are using wireless connection:
1. Go to My Xbox and select System Setttings. 2. Select Network Settings. 3. Select Wired Connection or the name of your wireless network. 4. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
If your wireless signal is only one or two bars, try improving your signal strength by following the suggestions below.
  • Move your router or gateway off the floor and away from walls and metal objects such as metal file cabinets).
  • Minimize obstructions along a straight-line path between your Xbox and your wireless router or gateway.
  • Shorten the distance between your console and your wireless router or gateway. Ideally, your network hardware should be near the center of your home.
  • Change the position of the antenna on your Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter (external adapter only).
  • Turn off wireless devices. If your router uses the 2.4 GHz band, try turning off wireless devices, such as 2.4 GHz cordless telephones and Bluetooth devices.
  • Try changing your wireless channel. Wireless routers and gateways can broadcast on different channels and one channel might be clearer than another. See your hardware documentation for help changing wireless channels.
  • Add a wireless repeater to extend your wireless network range. You can boost your signal strength by placing a wireless repeater halfway between your router or gateway and your console.
  • Add an Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter.
  • Switch wireless signal bands. If you have a dual-band router and an external wireless adapter, try switching the router to a wireless protocol that transmits on the 5 GHz band (wireless protocol A or N). Please see your hardware documentation for help with changing the wireless protocol.
  • Switch to a cable.

My Datal Turbofire2 Xbox 360 controller won't connect to my computer.

For the Microsoft branded controllers, you need a usb adapter. Amazon has them ( http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1299466859&sr=1-4 )or you can search Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver for windows. For the price, the best option is to purchase the adapter bundled with a Microsoft controller.

Are all xbox 360's able to connect to wireless broadband

Yes, with the wireless adapter, and wireless router, any Xbox 360 can go wireless.

Go to "My Xbox" -> "Network Settings" -> "Configure Network", the Xbox will ask you a few things about your network, and that's it. You should be connected pretty easily.
