The laser assembly is almost 300. There are brushes under the head that could be worn out.

I would imagine an item from a company such as this has a fuze or such to prevent damage from cross connection. The pop you heard is probably an internal fuze or overload unit going off.
They are online at samsclub for 39$ if you can't fix it.

I know it's 3 years old this question but I had the same problem. Good thing is the makita battery willl fit. I just got one from ebay works great

Press and hold the "+ - units" button and hold for over one second. It should then let you select your units of measure. In this case it should be the second selection, which is "0.00 ft".
