Because if you only connect with USB that's normal.
USB tranfers still photos.
For Video you will require a firewire cable connected to camera and computer.

ZR85 doesn't recognize tape present

If your Canon ZR85 camcorder is not recognizing that a tape is present, there are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Make sure that the tape is properly inserted into the camcorder. If the tape is not properly seated in the camcorder, it may not be recognized.
  2. Check the tape for any visible damage or wear. If the tape is damaged, it may not be recognized by the camcorder.
  3. Clean the heads of the camcorder using a head cleaning cassette or a cleaning solution designed for camcorders.
  4. If the camcorder has a manual tape loading mechanism, make sure that the mechanism is properly aligned and functioning.
  5. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the camcorder itself. You may want to try contacting Canon customer service for further assistance.
I hope this helps! If you have any further questions or if you are having trouble troubleshooting the issue, don't hesitate to ask.

Canon ZR85 Tapes will not go in, it will eject the tape. Why?

Sounds as if your camera has a mechanical problem with the tape loading mechanism. It is possible that it just needs a clean/lube, but otherwise it will need to be repaired or replaced.

Is it possible to transfer videos from my ZR 85

It is possible with an appropriate software (like Nero) and a cable to fit into your computer's video port.

I can playback the tapes but now I can't see anything on the screen when I want to record. The screen is just black. Is something not set correctly?

If your camcorder is Canon ZR85 then it has bad ccd imager problem and that part will be replaced to see live view in camera mode for recording.
Canon offers Free of Cost repair for ZR85 model.

Canon ZR85 camcorder won't turn on

Steps for removing the tape from a totally dead ZR85:
1. Turn camera upside down.
2. Move "Open/Eject" button to full right position (toward lens).
3. Manually push tape door open.
4. On the metal surface that sits between you and the tape, there is a very small screw. There is probably a yellow sticker next to the screw that says "Do not press on this part". With a small jewelry phillips screwdriver, remove that screw.
5. Push the metal plate (with tape) in the direction ofr the door and lift slightly. The metal assembly holding the tape comes loose, exposing the top of the tape.
6. Pull the tape upwards (out of the camera). At this point, the tape will still be engaged in the play heads. With the cartridge out far enough to see the heads, reach in with your jewelry screw driver and carefully lift the tape over the heads, and free from the camera.
7. Use the eraser on the end of a pencil to wind your tape back into the cartridge.
8. When re-assembling the mechanism in the camera, there are two curved slots on both sides of the piece you took loose. You'll need to thread these onto two posts inside before you place the top back in position and put the screw back in.

Connecting zr85 to vcr to record vhs tape to dv or sd card

I also have a Canon ZR-- left of the lens and the built-in microphones, there is a small panel that opens to reveal several ports. The middle yellow one is the AV In/Out. You can plug in the cable that came with your camera. One end looks like a microphone plug, the other has 3 RCA type plugs- red, white and yellow. These get plugged into your VCR's OUT plugs on the back of the VCR. Place a tape in the camcorder, open the LCD panel and push the REC PAUSE button. On the VCR, press the Play button. When the tape reaches the point you want to begin recording, press the camcorder's Play/Pause button. When you want to stop recording, press the Stop button on the camcorder.
This is also detailed on page 82 of your manual, manuals are available online at Canon.com. Your specific manual is at: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=174&modelid=9739#DownloadDetailAct
Hope this helps.
