This is usually caused by a defective CCD image sensor and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

My Canon ZR-40 Mini DV Camcorder only has a blank screen when in VCR mode. Cannot use any VCR functions. When I try to record, it says 'No Card' but there is no slot for an SD card at all.

It's possible that the video head is dirty or damaged, which is preventing the camcorder from playing back tapes. You may need to clean or replace the video head. As for the "No Card" message, it may be a default message that appears when the camcorder cannot detect a tape. Check that the tape is inserted correctly and try a different tape to see if the issue persists. If the problem continues, it may be a more serious issue with the camcorder that requires professional repair.

Camera will not play tapes

If you are getting a blue screen while trying to play back a tape that you know has a recording on it then its gonna be 1 of 2 things, No.1 your video heads have gotten dirty and you need to get a cleaning tape to run through the tape path to clean the unit, or No2 if your cleaning it doesnt help then you are going to need to have the video heads replaced. Usually once the heads are replaced they check the alignments for you as well and do a proper cleaning. I hope this helps

I have seen this problem many times, the recorder unit needs to be replaced, either something in the tape path has become out of alignment or dirty like a capstan motor or gears or the video head assy is defective. I hope this helps.

Connecting zr85 to vcr to record vhs tape to dv or sd card

I also have a Canon ZR-- left of the lens and the built-in microphones, there is a small panel that opens to reveal several ports. The middle yellow one is the AV In/Out. You can plug in the cable that came with your camera. One end looks like a microphone plug, the other has 3 RCA type plugs- red, white and yellow. These get plugged into your VCR's OUT plugs on the back of the VCR. Place a tape in the camcorder, open the LCD panel and push the REC PAUSE button. On the VCR, press the Play button. When the tape reaches the point you want to begin recording, press the camcorder's Play/Pause button. When you want to stop recording, press the Stop button on the camcorder.
This is also detailed on page 82 of your manual, manuals are available online at Canon.com. Your specific manual is at: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=174&modelid=9739#DownloadDetailAct
Hope this helps.
