After extensive search and trying several Gigabyte drivers for GA-SIML which made my PC crash I finally found the correct driver.
I have an ixtreme 7009 from Pacard Bell but found the driver at their website under a different model using the same motherboard:

Under controlpanel - sound settings I had to manually choose this device SigmaTel Audio - after which I had audio again.
