This is the second remote that this has happened. My Yamaha HTR-5860 remote will not always work. The volume and input keys (tv, tuner, dtv et al) are no problem. Buthe the different sound mode keys and the set up menu and level keys will not work sometimes. If I jiggle for awhile they sometimes work, but this may take hours or days.

The volume keys should be working by default, but you may have volume punch through turned on (meaning the remote is sending signals for TV or CABLE volume function no matter what mode you are actually on). To unlock volume control for AUX mode, do the following: 1. Press and release AUX 2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice 3. Type 993 4. Press and release VOL- The remote should blink four times to confirm unlock.
I assume you want to slave it to the receiver and drive some more speakers with it.
Connect some RCA cables from whichever channel pre-outs you want on the HTR-5860 to any input on the AX-596.
Set the AX volume to something sufficiently high, run through the HTR's speaker level setup and match the AX volume to match the channels on the receiver. Then leave the AX's volume alone.
---
If you just want the AX to have access to program sources of the HTR, run the RCA cables to it from one of the VCR1 or 2 Out (but DO NOT select whichever one you use via the front panel). These are not affected by the HTR's volume controls.
Sometimes volume controls are held on by an Allen type screw, which can become loose, allowing it to fall off. You should see a hole in the knob if it is. You might need a long thin Allen Key to get it back on.
Otherwise have checked my spares guide (though it's a few years old) and it seems Yamaha might only do their own spares.
I had similar problem when setting up the YAMAHA remote control for my NEC LCD TV. At the end I found I did not follow the YAMAHA manual properly. Did you hold down the DTV/CBL button, and AT THE SAME TIME press the AV POWER for 3+ seconds? You should be able to "REMOTE SETUP OK" displayed in the front panel of the YAMAHA AV receiver. Hope this helps. BTW, only the TV POWER, TV MUTE and the numeric buttons work in my case.
this one worked for me...well...sort of, no power, but it got the big one! VOLUME! 0176 and to clarify this is to reply to houseof5girl, this worked on a motorola dvr from cox.
On , HTR-5930, composite inputs are routed only to composite outputs. The same happens to component input. You can't see video from V AUX if your TV is hooked-up on component output. Also, check if you connected correctly GREEN, BLUE AND RED on both receiver and TV SET.
