Try cleaning the interior of the unit with canned compressed air with the straw nozzle attached. After you have removed the battery. It may have a dust and lint buildup in it. Wait about 10 minutes, then take it outside (if it's above freezing) plug in the battery and see if you get the same Error Code.
If you do, then the unit is malfunctioning. You should contact Kidde Technical Service 877-877-7050 for further instructions. The may want you to return it for repair or replacement. Have the Model Number in hand when you call.

"Err" displayed -battery icon may show any state of battery capacity. One quick beep every 30 seconds. Unit is Error condition
Replace batteries. If "Err" (or blank display) continues, unit has malfunctioned. Replace immediately.
