Minus sign display problem

Calculators have two similar signs: the regular minus sign for subtraction, and the negation (change sign) sign. When applied, the latter changes the sign of the quantity to which it is applied. The minus sign - for subtraction is on the central line, the negation sign is smaller and somewhat raised above the center line.
The change sign key may be marked (-) , (+/-), or +/-

HP35s minus sign display is incorrect

The minus is always centered while the negative is always at the top.

If you're in algebraic mode, press 1 - 2
You should see the centered minus sign between the one and the two. Now press ENTER, and you should see the top negative preceding a one.

The two are two different things. The first indicates subtracting one number from another. The second indicates a negative quantity.

Are you sure the minus is at the top? Or was the negative centered?

-4/5-3i

Enter it as
( (-) 4 / 5 , (-) 3 )

The (-) key is just to the right of the decimal point. The ( and ) keys are just above the 8 and 9 keys.

I need to use the exponential function with a negative exponent on my TI-30XIIS. I hit 2nd then e^x button, but when i input a negative exponent I get an error. Help please!

I think what you did was use the minus sign instead of the negative sign, on that calculator, the two are not interchangeable. I purposely used the minus sign just now and also got a syntax error, but it looks like it works with the negative sign (-) located under the 3 button.

Where is the negative sign?

The negative sign is the same as the minus sign. It is above the [+] and below [x] . Using the minus button will have the same effect and will negate the number you press after it.

How to graph y=-5/2x-2 on ti-84 plus calculator

Press Y= (the key at the very top left, above the blue 2ND key). On the Y1= line, enter (-) 5 / ( 2 X ) - 2 if the function is "negative five over 2x minus 2" or (-) 5 / 2 X - 2 if the function is "negative five-halves x minus 2".
(The (-) is the key to the right of the decimal point.) Then press GRAPH (the very top right key) and the graph should appear. You can press WINDOW (just to the right of the Y=) and change the window settings if you wish.

If this doesn't do it, post a comment and we can go from there.

Err:syntax when I try to graph with ''-'' on ti-84 plus

Hello,
The calculator has two minus signs
  1. The regular MINUS sign which is used with the subtraction operation. This operation is binary, requiring two operands (two terms). In a-b, a and be are the operands (they very specific names, but I will skip this detail).
  2. The negation or change sign. This operation is called unary, requiring one operand. -a means take the negative of the number a.
These are the technicalities, in which you may not be interested. On calculators, the two operations are implemented differently, with two signs, the regular minus sign -- , and the change sign (-) usually smaller in size than the regular -- sign and raised above the main line.

Examples. Let (-) be the negation and -- the regular minus.
  • If you enter (-) 12 the TI84Plus accepts it and calculates the negative of 12.
  • If you enter 12 (-) 13 the TI protests with a syntax error
  • If you enter 12 ( (-) 13) the calculator interprets it as 12* (-13) and calculates -156.
  • If you enter --12, the calculator displays Ans--12, where Ans is the last result calculated. If Ans happens to be 0, the new result is obviously the one you are expecting. But if Ans holds a non zero value, this is incorrect.
Suppose you have to calculate X^(-2)*X^(-1/3)
You can enter it exactly as it is written above. In this case, you must use the change sign (-) in both factors.
You can also decide to use the power rules and enter the expression as X^( -2 --1/3). In this case the first minus is the negation and the second is the regular minus.

I could go on with a few more examples, but that will take us away from your present concern.

In short.
  1. If the minus sign is the leftmost (first) symbol in your function (after the Y1=) you should use the negation. Any subsequent minus should be the regular minus --
  2. If the minus sign is the first symbol in an exponent, you must use the negation. Any subsequent minus in the expression of an exponent should be the regular minus --
I hope it did not bore you death with details you do not care to know about. I do hope that it will help you prevent this type of syntax errors.

How do I proform the -log of a number ie -log(1.2 X 10-5) to find the pH

Hello,
The pH is defined as the negative log in base 10 of the H+ (H3O+) ion concentration. The concentration of your solution is 1.2x10^(-5). You calculate the log of 1.2x10^(-5) which is -4.9208188754, let us just say it is equal to -4.921.
Once result is displayed press the change sign key (-) or on some calculators [+/-] and calculator will take the negative of the result.
So your pH is about 4.921

Another less efficient way to do it is to enter
0-log(1.2x10^-5) [ENTER]. The result will be positive.

The change sign (-) is smaller than the regular MINUS sign. It is used with negative exponents and to change the sign (hence its name) of a displayed result.
