Thanks for helping me. I use an EX DG Sigma 24-70 lens. I keep it in AF mode as well as the camera. I have just gotten a shutter release cable which I hope will help, but I haven't tried it yet. I was used to handholding most shots with the Sony camera... this is hard to justify. Is there such a thing as a misaligned Auto Focus feature on my camera? It is just a bit off, although the focus in the viewfinder looks sharp. Some shots look in focus and sharp until I get them on my monitor.
I don't know about any misaligned focus feature on the D80. Have you checked to see what focusing mode you are using, ie. single auto focus, closest subject, or wide area focus. Closest subject can really throw off your focus. I would switch to single auto focus mode. Another reason for poor focus would be dust on the auto focus sensor which is located under the mirror box.
Check on the focus mode, if it's not a mechanical problem, I'd be willing to bet that's what it is.
