The fault code E2 means the electronic control detected the thermistor is shorted. It's either the wire harness connecting the thermistor and electronic control is shorted or the thermistor is indeed shorted or its resistance is too low. Measure the resistance of the thermistor then refer to the temperature and resistance table for the normal thermistor resistance values. Replace the thermistor if the measured resistance is not in the table.

Check the wire harness for short circuit if the thermistor resistance is good and make sure the connectors are inserted correctly to the appropriate terminals. Replace the harness if shorted. The problem lies in the electronic control board if no issue is found in the harness and the connections.

The thermistor is located on the blower housing and can be accessed through the toe panel. Shut off the gas supply if the dryer is gas type and disconnect electrical power. Remove the two hex-head screws from the bottom flange of the toe panel then pull the panel down and off the cabinet.

You may try disconnecting one of the thermistor wires, insulate it then reconnect power and start the dryer. The wire harness is shorted or the electronic control board is malfunctioning if E2 still flashes after starting the dryer. Disconnect the wire harness from the electronic control board and restart the dryer. Trace the wire harness and look for the short circuit or simply replace it if E1 (thermistor open) is displayed instead of E2 after the wire harness is disconnected from the electronic control board.

The thermistor is indeed shorted if E1 is displayed instead of E2 after the thermistor is disconnected and the dryer is started. The only viable solution then is replacing the thermistor.

The electronic control board is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced if E2 still flashes after the wire harness is completely disconnected.

Dryer not working. failure code E2

The electronic control board detected that the thermistor located on the blower housing is shorted (zero resistance). Either the wire harness connecting the thermistor and the electronic control board has a short circuit or the thermistor is indeed shorted. My dryer stops after 15 seconds and the code is E2, what does this mean?

E2 and fast shutdown is a shorted thermistor. The thermistor is mounted on the blower housing right next to the duct fusethemobilian_1226.jpg

Code E1

E1 or E2 Thermistor Failure

The dryer will not operate if the exhaust temperature drops below 18 degrees F. or exceeds 250 degrees F.

When the thermistor circuit is open (>50K ohms), the error code E1 flashes in the display.

When the thermistor circuit is shorted (<500 ohms), the error code E2 flashes in the display.

Normal thermistor resistance values:
60 degrees F. - 15.3K ohms.
70 degrees F. - 11.9K ohms.
80 degrees F. - 9.2K ohms.

Take the top off the dryer and inside you'll find the "tech sheet." It has instructions for removing the front panel and locating the thermistor.

E-2 error code on whirlpool duet dryer

“E2” flashes if the thermistor has shorted.

The thermistor monitors the exhaust temperature
and cycles the high-limit thermostat on
and off to maintain the desired temperature.
1. Turn the dryer off but keep the electrical
supply connected.
2. Make sure that the dryer is empty and that
the lint screen is clean.
3. Close the dryer door.
4. Select Heavy Duty, Timed Dry, More Time
or Less Time, End of Cycle Signal (Louder)
and Start.
5. If error codes E1 or E2 flash on the display
after 1 minute and the dryer turns off,
the thermistor, or the wire harness, is either
shorted or open. Check the wire connections
at the thermistor or the machine
control electronics board. If wiring checks
okay, replace the thermistor.
6. If the dryer seems to operate normally, remove
the exhaust vent and start the dryer.
7. Select the desired temperature cycle to be
tested, and select 20 minutes of Timed Dry
heat using the More Time or Less Time
pushbuttons.
