Studio lighting

I'm trying to connect My D40 to my studio lights. When I push the test button on the studio Lights the lights will flash. but when I push the button on the camera nothing happens I do have the adapter for mount on the camera.but the adapter came with the lights..is the adapter universal or do I need a special adapter

is that adapter for nikon? the pins are different for each producer.

what is the system you are using ? brand? wireless?

I own a Nikon d40 and use my school's d60 and d70 with their alien bee B800's. The problem is that I can use the hot shoe with zero problems and no special set up on the d70 but when I swap it to either of the other 2 cameras it will not work. The hot shoe will trigger the flash units but firing the camera results in nothing. Am I missing a setting? I have them on full manual, have tried turning down the on camera flashes with no luck. I really appreciate anyone taking the time to help.
