You need to talk to HP tech support... to do a proper reset you need to access menus that are meant for tech support and developers only. If you "brick" your OJ using those menus on your own (including instructions from anyone here), it's considered customer damage and voids the warranty. If you post your request at the link below, you should get a PM from an official HP tech support person telling you how to do the reset.
Press 'MENU', Move to 'BASIC FAX SETUP' using right arrow key & press 'Enter', move to 'RINGS TO ANSWER' using arrow key & press 'Enter', enter desired no. of rings and press 'Enter'. The fax will answer after the set no. of rings in 'AUTO' answer mode.
Issue
When
the all-in-one product is sharing a phone line with voice calls, some
calls are interrupted by fax tones. Follow the steps below to solve the
problem.Step one: Check the Rings to Answer setting
If
Auto Answer is enabled, the HP fax product will answer the phone line
when the number of rings reaches the number of rings specified in the
Rings-to-Answer setting. When voice calls will be received on the same
phone line as faxes, set to rings-to-answer to 6.
If
you do not want the fax to answer automatically, either turn off Auto
Answer from the front panel and receive faxes manually (this may result
in lost faxes) or subscribe to a distinctive ring service from the phone
company (if available).
Refer to the Answering faxes manually
section below to learn how to answer faxes manually or refer to the Using distinctive ringing
section below for more information about using distinctive ringing.

The telephone line which is coming from out should be connected to the line 1 of the printer and Telephone answering machine should be connected to Line 2 .
2. You also need to check that after how many rings the Telephone answering machine answers the call you have to keep the "Rings to answer" 2 less than that of Telephone answering machine.
Lets assume that your Telephone Answering Machine answers the call after 4 rings then keep the rings to answer in All in One to 2
How to set Rings to Answer
1. Press the Setup button on the Front panel of the printer
2. Scroll Down and go to Basic Fax Setup - Select it
3. Scroll down and got to - Rings to Answer - Select it
go to menu option and choose the option fax and set the parameter like auto receive or manual set the ring auto answer mode after certain ring. If it is in auto receiving mode it will receive the fax after the ring which you set. Hope this helps. Please rate my response. Thanks. Have a good day.
If you are using the same phone line as your fax, you can start by connecting the answering machine on Line2 or 2-Ext at the back of the fax. Set the fax to answer on two rings higher than the Answering Machine. (for example: if answering maching is 4 rings, fax is 6 rings)
It is your phone answering machine that must pick up in three rings or less.
Therefore 4 is too much. I would not limit number for fax machine itself.
On receipt of fax sometimes seems like it will not work when answering machine picks up in the middle. However, leave it and it will work. Sometimes sender will hear your answering machine and cancel as well. So try to ensure they don't give up at other end as well.
Receive a fax Depending on the Auto Answer setting, your HP All-in-One can receive faxes automatically or manually. If you have set the Auto Answer option to Off, you will need to receive faxes manually. If the Auto Answer option is set to On (the default setting), your HP All-in-One will automatically answer incoming calls and receive faxes after the number of rings specified by the Rings to Answer setting. (The default Rings to Answer setting is five rings.) Receive a fax manually If you set up your HP All-in-One to receive faxes manually (the Auto Answer option is set to Off) or you answer the phone and hear fax tones, 1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is turned on and you have paper loaded in the input tray. 2. Remove any originals from the document feeder tray. 3. If you are currently on the phone with the sender, instruct the sender to press Start on their fax machine. 4. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the following: a. Press Fax on the control panel of your HP All-in-One. b. When prompted, press 2 to select Receive fax. c. After the HP All-in-One begins to receive the fax, you can hang up the phone.
