Here is a link to to the latest software for your MP3 player. What is the problem when installing your software?
That was the only options I had. Since it is older software, if it does not run on Windows XP in the Windows 98 compatibility mode, then I don't know what else to do. I guess iRiver does want to support the unit with newer software.
One the software is installed, do a right mouse click on the program icon, go to the compatibility mode and select the mode you would like to run.

This solution does not work on windows XP systems... even the iRiver site notes this is for Windows 98?? Any other ideas?
In case you did not get my previous comment please note that I was already aware of this option but as noted in the iRiver site it is only for Windows 98 and not XP. I did try loading it on XP and it seemed to load okay but would not function when I plugged in my player??
I was not aware of a windows 98 compatibility mode. can that be applied to just a single piece of software and can it be turned on and off and would it have implications for other software I am running? Any further advise with this? I have never used this before but I can try that and let you know if that works... thanks
I ran the install which 'seemed' to go okay like a normal install but no program ICON was created and nothing shows in the start menu program list, but an iRiver folder does get created in Program Files... I tried using compatibility and changing that on the exe files but that did nothing, i am not sure what else to try...
So none of what you sent me is the solution for updating the DB... the solution is to plug in the player via the data port and the PC USB and then when the players main music directory is displayed right click that directory; an option will be displayed "Add Music(s) to DB's" and then let it run to create the various music index's including, Song Name, Artist, Genre, etc.... it seems that a version of the host based software we have been looking for is also stored on the player so this is how you get to it and run it. MP3 files can still be added via drag and drop or copy and paste to individual music directors and then that single directory can also be updated following the same process. I only figured this out through trial and error as I was certain there had to be a way by using the player itself.
