Hello,

Your computer is experiencing a no boot problem which means that the operating system is corrupted. You can do a start up repair to fix the computer but if it won't fix it then that's the time that you need to reinstall the whole operating system.

It could have been very helpful if you provided us with your operating system so that we can provide you with the exact troubleshooting. However, I just presume that you are using windows VISTA or Windows 7. However, this troubleshooting also works with windows XP.

Before you start the start up repair. You need the Operating System Installation disc from Microsoft.

1. Insert the disc in the dvd/cd drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Once you see the "press any key to boot to cd" message. Press any key.
4. It will bring you to a page where it will ask you to INSTALL or to REPAIR. Just click on repair.
5. It might ask you to load the drivers. Just click ok or next.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

However, if start up repair won't fix the problem, Clean Reinstallation is the next step. Clean reinstallation will delete everything in your computer including the files, pictures, etc. that you have saved. But you cannot really access them anymore since the computer won't boot up.

I'm am providing you with the links to the tutorial on how to reinstall the operating system.

1. WINDOWS XP REINSTALLATION TUTORIAL
2. Windows 7 Reinstallation Tutorial
3. Windows Vista Installation Guide

I hope this helps. Thank you for using fixya.

I have a Samsung NP-RF511 S04AU That won't start past the startup screen. I don't want to lose what is on my C drive can someone please help. I am running Window 7

Several things you can try.
Roll back system with System Restore. Under Safe Mode (press F8 during boot and choose Safe Mode). Win 7 - Start > Search type System Restore. Now choose a date prior to problem. You may have to try a few dates. Uninstall last program(s) that was installed, again in safe mode.

In Safe Mode try disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type MSConfig. In Startup tab, uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when only you initiate.

My computer will not load past the windows xp welcome screen. It has been not working for weeks now. None of the different start options seem to work (safe mode) etc. Please help

Try these options:

1. reseat your hard drive ( removing it and connect it again ). After this check in the bios, if it is detected there. Restore default settings in the bios. Then restart your computer.

2. Use your recovery cd.

3. Use your Windows XP installer cd to do a system restore.

My laptop went off, turned it back on and it loads the advent screen, then it goes to the screen that says-''run in safe mode,,start windows normally etc. Tried all the options,,none of them work,,it wont go...

Your best bet is to replace the keyboard. They are cheap (under $20.00) and easy to replace. All other options involve making a bootable flash drive (more complicated and you still have a broken keyboard)

My hp 2000 will not go past the welcome screen

Try pressing F8 on bootup and starting in Safe Mode. If it will go into safe mode, run Chkdsk /r /v at a command prompt. You might be able to recover from this.

Windows XP won't load past the 'user account welcome screen'.

If you boot into safe mode* and have same problem, you might be missing a file called "userinit.exe."
It's located in the /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 subdirectory. You can copy it from another xp computer
(suggest matching updated pro vs home files). Use your harddrive as a slave on another computer
if necessary.

*safe mode: Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard during boot up.

Then you gotta ask: how did that file get deleted? It's a popular file to attack by malware authors and
some anti-virus software will delete it as part of an infection cleansing.
