Is your heart working? Sorry, bad joke. The only thing besides the watch malfunctioning is that you need to have your hand and arm relaxed when you touch the watch case. Apparently if your muscles are tense it can cause the monitor to not read.
I have a problem solving checklist about getting Heart rate readings in my tips and tricks page that may be helpful.
#1) you have to make sure the strap is across your chest and contacting the skin directly
#2) you have to push the button on the front of your watch to turn it on.
After that it should read automatically, there is no trick to your watch.
Check out my tips and tricks section for a guide on troubleshooting heart rate readings.
One other possibility if you changed the battery yourself (never recommended) is that some damage or moisture has gotten into your watch and made it impossible for the watch to read heart rate. This is a more common reason than you think and why all manufactures of Heart Rate monitors and other types of watches have you send them in to their authorized service centers.
How do I turn the Heart Rate function on and off on my watch?
Within the Date and Time screen, if
the heart icon is showing, the heart rate function is on. To turn off
the heart rate function, simply hold the Reset button until the heart
icon goes away.
I´m experienced the same problem of incorrect readings after a long time without use.
I cleaned the rubber parts of the chest strap with soap and water, than I use some silicone grease or other silicon liquid to keep the rubber hydrated. Make a careful cleaning in the contact area between the rubber and the plastic parts, the fissure in these area use to be full of "sweat dust".
