Check the carb gaskets, the fuel bowl for dirt and float needle and seat. Bad gasket can cause loos of vacum and dirt can cause the float needle and float to get stuck.

I have a Predator 4,000 generator that wont stay running. I followed all recommended instructions before trying to start it. It ran first time for about two minutes and died.same thing every time.

sounds like a fuel flow problem.Pull the fuel line off at the carb and see if fuel flows well when you turn the gas on.If the fuel is flowing to the carb, you will have to remove the float bowl off the bottom of the carb and check for fuel flow through the needle and seat which the float controls in the carb.If fuel flows well through the needle and seat and the float words well without binding, next is to clean the main jet which may be plugged.Ethanol in the fuel these days can cause problems in these areas.ALWAYS shut off the fuel in all small engines and let the carb run dry when storing small engines for any length of time.

Motor will run on starting fluid but wont stay running

Did it sit for a long time with gas in it?

Your idle jet(s)/circuit is plugged up.

When gas sits too long, the components start to separate, and it turns almost into a varnish.
This starts to plug up the jets and passages, starting with the smallest, which happens to be the idle circuit and jet.

Clean out the carb, paying attention to the jet and the passage drilled in the carb body.

I have cleaned the gas tank, fuel lines and rebuilt the carb. It now runs but just at idle almost in the choke position. I have played with the throttle and it wants to die when I move it to normal ru

if it runs only in choke it sounds like its lean (choke reduces airflow and gets back to a mixture it will run on.....just). It could just be a small bit of crud in the carby jet. You cleaned the fuel system.....did you install or replace a fuel filter? sometimes cleaning the tank and lines stirs up stuff that needs to be filtered.....even though you may had cleaned and rinsed out a lot.

I have a 06 honda trx250ex put new gas and oil in it and plug and battery and iit turns over but wont start but when i put started fluid in where the plug goes it starts for like a second or so and quits...

your problem is a clogged carb. clean float valve, main jet and idle circuit with a can of spray carb cleaner.

disconnect fuel hose at carb and see if gas flows.

reconnect hose and open float bowl drain valve. If no gas tap on side of float bowl with plastic end of screwdirver to free up float.

still no gas? remove float bowl and try to shoot carb cleaner into the fitting for the gas line from tank.

if gas flows now then put it all back together and it should run

if not then remove carb and clean carb passages, main jet, idle circuit.

Only runs with the choke on

The choke does 2 things. It makes the mixture richer with more gas, and it also raises the idle speed.
Try adjusting the mixture. If it has no effect, the idle circuit in the carb is plugged and needs cleaning.
If it helps, then you probably have an intake leak somewhere.
If it is just the idle speed that matters, then try just increasing the idle speed adjustment, or make sure the plug is not fouled or anything else that could make it run bad.

Wont stay running

the problems is in the carburetor, common problems when unit does not run often and rust get get build up. get some automotive carburetor cleaners and spray it heavy in the carb, don't worried about flooding it or damaging anything, it will dry out faster than gas. (use little gas if you need to) try to start it up and get it running with the carb cover off and continue to spray carb cleaner in the carb while the engine is running, do this couple of time and hope that would clear it out. if that don't work you will need to take it apart and clean it. you have small tiny object obstructing the carb flow. the unit doesn't have a fuel pump, it run on gravity feed, the carb are easily obstructed. hope that help a bit

Engine not running

Your carb should have another jet. What you cleaned was the main jet in the center of the carb. There should be another jet called a pilot jet. Often it has a metal plug covering it up so the setting can not be changed at that point. Instead, they want you to change the setting with the pilot air screw. In each case, if you remove the screw, count the number of turns for removal and put the screw back the same number of turns.

The pilot jet controls the idle. It picks up gas from the float bowl then the gas gets metered by the jet and the air screw then passes through a circuit (drilled passageway), in the carb casing and comes out in the center of the carb close to the needle jet. You will need to get the jet and circuit cleaned.
