Changed tracking on vcr and got screen shrunk with black bands on top and bottom. Won't go away and doesn't go away when you unplug and plug back in, or when you disconnect VCR. Any suggestions?

I believe the TV may be at fault here. This aging TV has a vertical problem, The horizontal bans you describe are common on an aging Zenith TV. You need to find an electronic enthusiast to correct this. Tell them to resolder the vertical IC and replace those capacitors that are near and next to the vertical IC. And have them replace the capacitors in the power supply. They will include a 25 volt 100 MF cap and a 35 volt 22 Mf cap. These are located very near the STR 5041 regulator on a large heat sink. Have them replace the high voltage deflection cap that is about 200 volts at 1 Mf, near the flyback transformer. And on the other end of the board near two heat sinks (one of these is the vertical IC heat sink) there is a 25 volt 220 Mf cap that is dead by now. resolder any and all bad grounds. Please save this TV and give it the longevity it deserves. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.

if that 2 band according to you from top to bottom,it has a defective vertical stage.if this two band appears one on top and one at the bottom,it`s on vertical stage.leaky capacitors, resistance changed or resistor devalued ang ic`s, are too weak to amplify a signal to make the screen complete....

Sharp tv has small black and white image in black and white and half screen pink

Sounds like your LCD Control board went bad. Very small chance it is your main board since you said you cant bring up a menu.

Panasonic TC-P42S2 .. Transparent 2 inch wide vertical discoloration on panasonic 42 inch plasma, very left of the screen.

Fixed mine, myself! Black 3 inch vertical band (stripe) appeared after a cros country move on our PC-T50G10. Occasionally we would see white band with multicolored pixel width stripes. Took the risk of taking off the back to see if I could see anything. Found places on sides and bottoms where plastic like 2" flat cables could be seen. Guesstimated where the band was and found that I could flip down a black cover on one end of the cable. Tried to pull it, gently. Mistake. Realized it wouldn't one out like computer hard drive cables, so I took out the screws holding the plate on the other end (it's only an inch long). That allowed me remove the cable. Took it out, cleared away dust, put t back and closed the black over. It worked! Put the screws back in, back on and... we are happy (although I do have four extra screws!). Just be gentle.

New 37 in. tv conn. to cable not hdtv i have approx a 4" black band on each side and 2" band top & bottom is this a setting issue or because i don't have the hdtv box?

According to all the tech sheets I can see, this unit has no Tuner. If your using the cable box to change channels it probably doesn't support HDTV, except maybe for the individual channels. You might be able to access your TV's on-screen menu to change the way programs are displayed.

Samsung VCR SV-5000W Tracking Problem Symptom: I've used Maxell VCR Head Cleaner VP-100. Still having small white streaks across screen. I can apply small amount of pressure to bottom or top of VCR deck...

Your chassis ground is intermittant. Remove the VCR cover and look just behind the head drum. You will see two copper tangs sticking out, these supply the ground to the grey chassis and are a pressure fit. Remove the 7 screws from the grey chassis, two are underneath the VCR, two on top near the VHS tape opening, and three larger screws are on top of the chassis (2 near back and 1 near front). This will allow you to lift the grey chassis about a 1/2" and you can then reach below the copper tangs and gently pry them up. Reinstall the 7 screws and the VCR cover and the snow will disappear.

The bottom of the screen is black-as though there is a border along the bottom. I can't find a horrizontal adjustment anywhere.

It is a vertical issue, not horizontal.

Is the picture you have complete? Is there a black band along the top as well? If so, it may be because you are providing an HD aspect ratio of 16:9 instead of the TV native 4:3.

Try hooking up a VCR and watching a tape. Do you still have the black band on the bottom?

Black square (parental Control??)

You'll have to go into the menu setting of the VCR and turn the controls off, also you can try completely unplugging the VCR and then plugging it back in again to see if it goes away.

Tracking display will not go away

Try unplugging the unit for 30 minutes and see if that takes care of it. Just turning it off won't clear it because as long as power is coming to it ex. plugged in, it won't clear. If that doesn't take care of it you may have a problem with the selector board. If so get yourself a new VCR as it will cost more than it is worth to fix it.
