The sound quality gets real bad after playing for a while. If I take the cartridge out and put it back on it sounds fine again for a while. Should I just replace the cartridge or could it be in the tone arm.

Assuming it is not just accumulated fluff on the stylus or a worn stylus I would suggest you clean the contacts on the back of the cartridge - try a little squirt of switch cleaner (available from electronics stores or online from places like Amazon) If that doesn't cure the problem replace the entire cartridge just to be sure. All styli should be replaced after no more than 400 hours use but I normally just replace the whole cartridge anyway.

Are you sure it's not the amp it's connected to that's not the problem? Magnetic cartridges have to be amplified by a pre-amp inside the main amp. It's sole purposes is to do just that, so the rest of the amp can work just fine. Most of these pre-amps are just a single IC and a few other parts. From what you describe the IC is perhaps getting hot, due to some internal fault, when a signal is applied to it. Break the signal and it cools down making it sound normal. There could be one in the turntable itself, but I doubt it.
If you are good with a soldering iron you will find the IC by tracing the wires back from the turntable imput socket on the amp. Conecting the turntable to another amp will confirm it either way.

When playing LP the sound is bass heavy, but when playing a cd, the sound is perfect.... any suggestions?

The record deck is played through a separate pre-amp to all other functions, so it therefore could be a fault in that pre-amp, but I doubt it. You can fit a wide verity of cartridges in record decks that will each give a different response to the sound. But first check that the cartridge connections are correct. Try swapping them around, it might change what you get. But it could simply be that you have a cartridge that produces a lot of bass. Changing the cartridge to a high quality recommended type - by say some hi-fi buffs website or magazine, might solve the problem.

Looking to upgrade the cartridge/styli in my ion audio profile pro turntable. What products/company/style should I be looking for?

I have the same turntable, and sadly the cartridge is proprietary and unable to be changed. However, you can still upgrade the sound quality by replacing the stylus to a higher quality needle. I did that for about $25 and feel better about playing my precious vinyl. The biggest problem to this turntable is the lack of anti-skate. That's very bad...

Some of my records sound distorted in playback others play fine it seems

This could be a defective cartridge or a bad belt. It all depends upon the type of distortion that is present. Poor speed control can be difficult to hear with speech but very noticable in music. With low volume sources, poor quality may not be as noticable and hide cartridge problems. Can you please update this with a description of the distortion as well as the model number?

Thanks,
Dan

During vinyl play the sound will drop Numark TTUSB

sounds like the needle is worn down...try to replace the needle.....the buzzing sound often comes from open groung connections...that can come from the cartridge itself to the jacks on the back of the unit....bad ground and buzzing is normal for turntables and will also dramatically affect your sound level because the buzz or groung fault is higher than the sound being picked up by the needle.....open grounds can be checked with a meter set to continuity....to check for continuos line feed with no breaks in the lines.....if you find a broken line ...then that's your problem....it is a very simple repair....if the ground problem is in the cartridge...replace the cartridge which comes with a new needle as well...it's cheaper to buy it that way in stead of just bying a needle...if the ground fault is anywhere after the cartridge...then it's just a mater of replacing or repairing the line..again..very cheap repair....also...if the cartridge just clips on to the shell, sometimes it makes bad connections there too....that can just be cleaned with a little sand paper and it will work again....good luck

No Real Time Sound from USB Port in Headphones

The problem is due to the design of the DELL Laptop itself. It is not dsigned to monitor the incoming signal. I bought a cheap Behringer UCA202 USB-Audio Interface. It provides for real time monitoring the incoming sound. I can also hear the accompanying music while I play along with pre-existing tracks. It's not the highest quality but it was only 25$ so well worth the price.

Random no audio

I have had this happen with this particular brand frequently. I have it plugged in to a power "strip" or surge protector. I find that if I turn the strip off then on again, it resets and fixes the problem.

Guitar Amp trouble...... Gets power but either no sound or very little.

Your problem sounds very similar to mine. I have a Marshal that does the same thing. It gets power but either no sound comes out or it's fragmented and buzzing. I took the circuit board out and found that a fuse had pulled/been knocked loose and was hanging free. If you take your amp apart, make sure you unplug it first. You're going to be be looking for something that look likes a small lego that suspended above the circuit board by wires coming out of both ends. If ones of these wires has pulled free then that's your problem. You can temporarily fix it by pressing the wire back into the circuit board and placing electrical tape over the top of the fuse to hold it all in place. If you do this, however, you can't play loud or it will rattle loose again and you don't really get more than about 10 minutes of play time. I'm about to solder mine whenever the guns arrives, so I'll let you know if this is a DIY project or not.
