If have only seen this happen a few times, first, i save the part from old water heaters that i replace, so i always have a couple . Second , the vent at the bottom could be parcially blocked from dust so you dont have proper air flow (blow it out with air). Third the heater could be over heating and creating too much heat near the burner. I would NEVER recomend bypassing this system , remember its a safety system , much like i would never plug a T&P .Also i have tried to purchase this part and it has to be ordered, not good when you are under the gun.
Good luck!
If I understand correctly, your FVIR shutoff system tripped on Rheem natural gas water heater.
1) Rheem page showing residential gas water heaters:
http://www.rheem.com/products/tank_water_heaters/gas_water_heaters
2) Sample manual for 22V50F1 shows this is manufactured home water heater
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=4e20f58c-94ce-4ac5-8971-9337178fb90f
Troubleshoot section says" Combustion shutoff system tripped: Contact a qualified service technician." Or call 1-800-432-8373
3) Another sample manual for Rheem 6-year residential water heater:
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=01091171-3bac-4cb9-a0a8-a11aac3bd668
Troubleshoot section says same thing > call qualified technician (plumber)
4) Bradford White gas water heaters have customer-resettable FVIR
New Whirlpool gas water heaters also have customer-resettable FVIR.
The industry changes fast, so call Rheem: 1-800-432-8373
5) A service call is certainly less expensive than hospital bill from FVIR event that can seriously burn or kill someone. And service call is is less trouble than having a residence burn down. These are the reasons why the insurance industry & medical field experts petitioned government leaders to mandate FVIRs on gas water heaters.
