American Standard Carlyle Series toilet is refilling about 10 percent of the water in the tank every 20 minutes. Do I need to replace the flapper or the entire flush valve?

Start with the flapper. They tend to dry up especially with water that contains chlorine. Purchase the American Standard flapper if available for that toilet. Works better than generics.

Adjust the water setting of the tank to higher level, meaning an additional water will be added to the tank. The purpose of this is to release extra water that will fill the missing water level in the bowl.

Problem: water tank running water and refilling itself

probably the flapper valve is not seating correctly over the outlet. you can fix it by reaching in and twisting the valve one way or the other till it seats properly and the leak will stop.

Strange that it went, but do you still have it? If so, bring it to your plumbing supply store and they should be able to match it up. Not sure why Home Depot can't help though. If you do not have it, bring the tank so they can try it right there. Good luck and make sure you don't overtighten when reassembling (can crack easier than you think). Can always tighten, but never loosen when it's too late.

Water leaks from tank to bowl till water level in the tank is jus

Yes. You will have to remove your tank from the bowl to replace the defective fill stack(the tube thing your flapper is attached to) it is not as hard as it seems.First remove water supply tube. Then remove the through the tank bolts. should be two of them. Lift off and turn tank upside down. remove spud gasket. Unscrew old stack. You should be able to get a universal kit to work with your tank and should come with all new parts including new flapper and spud gasket. You will need new through the tank bolts and note the sequence of assembly to get water tight seal on tank. Hope this helps

What is square box (float) attached to flush valve inside tank

The foam block does a few things: It helps with noise level, helps prevent condensation and also takes up space in the tank to lessen water usage with each flush.
Keep an eye on the outside of the tank and if you don't ever notice any moisture on the outside of the tank then I wouldn't worry about it all!!
