I have just bought a new home pc and connected my hp pavilion f50s monitor but no image. I have now connected it to my laptop and it works so monitor is fine. Can you help?

The PC might have a bad VGA output - it should work at the default level without the driver. I'd return the PC to the store. If you have another monitor, try it out to verify the VGA output is bad.

Depending on how new your television is, you can use a standard VGA cable to use your TV as an external monitor. This will then display the image from the laptop onto the television.
It sounds like your laptop's Back Light is out. The screen has two layers, the LCD display, which provides the image, and the back light, which gives it brightness and clarity. Unfortunately, it is no easy fix and typically costs more than a new laptop to replace. I'd recommend calling HP themselves if you want to get it repaired.
Sometimes there is a function button that switches from the external monitor to the laptop screen. I think your computer is Fn + F4. Try pressing that a few times and see if your screen comes back.
Also if you can see any thing on the laptops screen even a very faint image then you may have a problem with the screens inverter. The inverter is a very inexpensive part, usually less then $20. You will need a good set of small screw drivers do do this repair.
Yes you put in the video card and the default is lowest resolution and is usable without a driver, install driver then reboot and you have your new video card to set up the way you want.
Connect here a stardard Monitor to see if you have image. But you have to press the combination of FN+F4 to alternate between Laptop LCD and External Monitor.
Anyway at starup you can see if you have any image when the BIOS starts...
FN - is in the lower left side of your keyboard, next to CRTL.
IT could be a motherboard problem with the function key that controls the switching of the video infomation between the LCD screen and the external video connector.
It could be the function key circuitry on the motherboard that controls the back lighting levels on the LCD.
