Door handle broke off

My wife opened the door on the Samsung SMH7185STG 1.8 OTR Microwave, and it came right off. The plastic standoffs (top and bottom) broke. Any ideas for a fix as it appears the entire door must be disassembled to get to the handle screws, even if I could get replacement parts.

The handle on my Samsung Microwave SMH7185STG broke off

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2008

My Wife did the same, i called the Samsung parts and you dave to order the whole door which costs more than the microwave did when i bought it, now how ridiculous is that. Does any one have a parts depot where i can get this without getting a second mortgage

  • Anonymous Jan 10, 2009

My SMH7185STG microwave door handle broke off too. Samsung should recall the microwave and have the problem rectified.

  • OdomT73 Feb 21, 2009

Same thing happened to us this morning. I agree with the previous writer. We need to all write Samsung and complain. They need to recall these microwaves.

  • dfantum Mar 05, 2009

    Same Problem.

Thanks for the input - it was very helpful.

Partsstore.com has the handle end caps for $3.95 each.

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2009

As I closed the door the handle just broke off!!!!!! So much for a good mid-line microwave!!!!

  • Anonymous Mar 19, 2009

Same as all the rest. Broken handle. Cheap.

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2009

The same problem, only after 6 months of use.

  • Rosa Oct 25, 2012

Same Here these microwaves are disposable funny thing is that the doors break exactly 1 year from purchase when the warranty expires and we have to pay 250.00 to rectify the problem. What a rip off. I told them I was going to go online to any and all appliance consumer report links and say their model SMH9187W is a joke. They purposely make flimsy handles so we can replace the whole darn thing after a year because the bastards wont even sell us the part we have to go thru their stupid service center and pay them 150.00 for a service call on a part worth 50.00.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

You can get Samsung parts here.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

The plastic standoff holding the vertical handle is made of plastic. After awhile the post holding the sheetmetal screw fractures and the handle falls off (at least the top or bottom). Mine failed after 14 months.

I used expoxied the post back together and that sort of worked, but then after trying to tighten more to make the bracket sit flush with the door, the post broke off lengthwise. Used a bigger sheet metal screw to temporary hold in place.

Ordered replacement standoff from www.samsungparts.com (DE67-00222C) for $4.75, but the shipping and handling pushed it to $12.

See images.

Thanks for the pics and the part number. This is the second time in two years the standoff bracket has broken. The first time was only after 10 months. The entire handle came off in my hand. I didn't even pull on it very hard. At least the first time it was still under warranty and they paid for the repair. I asked the repair person if they had seen something like this before and she indicated that mine was the 10th one she had repaired in the previous six months.. The second time occurred about 14 months after the first incident. My girlfriend gently pulled on the handle and the bottom standoff broke. Wow Samsung...you really came up with an inferior design this time. You should be embarrassed and take a note from the Japanese and have your engineer in charge of this component commit Seppuku.

  • edcinpa Nov 03, 2010

Yesterday was the 2nd time the handle broke off for us. It lasted longer in our case, but it shouldn't break at all. I will call Samsung to see if they have changed their position on this issue, but I have low expectations. This has been going on for at least two years based on the comments on this site, so why don't they fix it?

  • Third try Dec 27, 2010

I have had the same problem occur twice and you are faced with a $12 purchase to replace them each time. I also have the matching range and the oven door handle caps are metal, a vast improvement. I've sent an e-mail to Samsung, but have got no response.
I'm thinking of buying what I hope is the last pair, filling them with epoxy to make them a solid block. If that doesn't work, I'll have to machine a pair out of aluminum bar stock.

  • rfick953 Jan 11, 2011

The problem with the handle is that the machining that attaches the top and bottom brackets to the handle is slightly off when they drilled the holes . If the handle is laid on a flat surface the top and bottom brackets will rock. In order to compensate for this defect the handle must be overtightened to flush with the door assembly. Eventually the plastic cracks and the handle fails. I've replaced my handle twice and today I noticed another crack developing.

  • sy223 Jan 15, 2011

same problem - great explanations - BUT - when i tried to unscrew broken handle - the screws won't back out? any help on this - I'd love to try a longer screw or new handle - but can't get original screw out!

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2012

I had the same problem and the instructions were perfect. I had no issues disassembling or reassembling.

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2013

    Worked like a charm, thanks!

My top handle broke off also. The anchor holding the screw crumbled. I just had mine a little over a year. They would not do anything about it. I will never buy any of their products again. Evidently there is a big problem with this and they should do something about this.

Fiberglass the inside of the plastic brackets after I took them off, filled the inside with the fiberglass resin, and I never had the problem again.

Microwave door alignment

test all this steps and fix it. God bless you

  1. Open leverCheck your microwave lever to determine if it is damaged. If it is broken, simply replace the lever to get your microwave door fully functional again.
  2. Door springResponsible for keeping downward pressure on the door hook, the microwave door spring can begin to malfunction. If this part is broken and prevents you from opening your microwave door, replacement is necessary.
  3. Door latchOne reason your microwave door may not open properly is a broken door latch. Located inside the microwave, the door latch manipulates the door hook to keep the door closed for safety and top performance. If broken, the door could become stuck in the locked position.
  4. Door hookIf your microwave door will not release properly, the door hook could be damaged. Located inside the door, the door hook is made of plastic and prone to breakage with extended use or age. As this part is unable to be repaired, the only option is to replace it.
  5. Button or button springIf the microwave door will not open, it could be an internal failure of the button or button spring. If it is determined that either of these parts is the source, both are replaceable and it is recommended that they be installed at the same time.
  6. Handle actuatorIf the microwave door will not open the plastic handle actuator could be broken. Connected between the door button and the door latch assembly, this plastic part could become damaged and brittle over time, which makes breaking inevitable. If this occurs, replace the handle actuator to get your microwave fully functional again.

Replacing a handle on a kitchenaide microwave

Hello

Unplug the microwave oven from its power outlet or turn off its circuit breaker. Remove the right fuse from the home fuse-box if your microwave is a built-in model.

Open the microwave door and take the top pin off its pivot bracket. Lift up the door and remove it from the bottom bracket. Lay the microwave door with its front side down on a folded towel. Remove the two choke screws from the door frame using a Phillips head screwdriver.

Remove the choke cover with the knife blade, starting from the microwave door's top right corner. Pry out the bottom and top right sides, leaving the side which houses the door handle in place.

Remove the choke tabs from their slots on the microwave door frame using the knife blade. Continue to work clockwise around your microwave door; remove the choker cover when you get to your handle's side to separate it from your choke.

Remove the two handles with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the handle from the microwave.

Screw the new handle in the position of the original handle. Lay the choke on the microwave door; set the choke cover right on top of it. Insert the choke tabs into their slots on the microwave door frame using the knife blade.

Secure the two choke screws using a Phillips head screwdriver; set the microwave door back on the bottom bracket. Slide the top pin into the microwave's pivot bracket.

Press the top pin down until it pops securely into place.

My samsung SMH7187STG microwave handle broke off.

You can order new "cap handles" (the plastic parts that join the aluminum handle to the door for 3.99 each plus 8.99 shipping and handling at the Sears Parts Direct Website. The part number is DE67-00222C. When you have the parts in hand, open the microwave oven door. On the inside surface of the door their is a black plastic frame around the door that pops off easily (gently use a screw driver to pry up the door frame) so that you can have access to the screws that attach the end caps to the door. You will need to hold the remant of the cap handle (the part that is probably broken off even with the glass surface on the outside side of the door) still while you unscrew the screws. Once the screws and broken remnant of the handle caps are out, you are ready to put new handle caps on the handle, then put the handle with the new handle caps on the door. By the way, Samsung was absolutely NO help with this. The agent I chatted with denied that their were any reports of the handles breaking off, so I had to cut and past the postings about the door handle breaking off ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE under "Community Q and A" into the chat box -- still the agent did not acknowldege the existance of these reports...or the possibility of a poor design. I asked for them to send me a couple of the $4 parts as a good will gesture....got nothing but lofty words about Samsung commitment etc. and only a authorized technition blah blah, no action. All you need is a strong thumbnail, a phillips head screw driver, new handle caps.

I need to replace the Sumsung Microwave Oven Mdel: SMH7185STG. The part is availoble but there are no screws visible. Need instructions on how to replce the door handle.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screw(s) you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

In some cases, you then have to gently rotate the handle to unlock it.

Microwave door tension spring

See answer here http://www.fixya.com/support/t265705-microwave_door

in different thread.. Basically have to pry plastic trim ring off inside of door with putty knife (careful, it cracks easily) to get to screws on bottom of door. See second pic. Top screws are easily accessible from inside of door. Spring can easily be replaced by hand once you get adequate access. You'll need a fairly stubby right angle screwdriver (I used a cut-down #2 Phillips bit and small Vice-Grips as a make-do) to get to the screws. Also need Torx (T10, I think) to detach the shock absorber doodads from the door where they attach above the hinges. If you're just starting to take the door apart, be careful when you take out the top 2 screws on the inside-- they hold the inside plastic piece on , but they also hold the whole outer stainless/ glass/ handle piece on. It just slips in at the bottom, so be ready to slide it out when you take these screws out.fea33aa.pngc391898.jpg

I have a GE Profile Microwave and the handle is broken....

I have the same issue. The Handle broke off my GE Microwave Oven (Model JVM1190SY 001). GE does not sell the handle seperately from what I can tell. I just ordered a new door. It's rediculously expensive. I tried to replace the handle with a nice drawer pull but couldn't find a size pull to match and I broke the plastic cover trying to get access to the screws for the handle, which is why I decided to buy the new door. Hopefully installation is not that difficult. This oven was manufactured in 2001, seems the handles have a 7 year life span.

Broken Handle

On almost any microwave oven door if you open the door,on the inside part of the door, theres a square plate thats plastic that is a one piece unit that goes all the way around the edge of the door . That held on by little plastic clips that are molded right on the suround and easy to break, so take a small screw driver(of course the ovens unplugged by now) and start at one end and start prying it out inch by inch. Being care full not to crack it. If yop do crack it, you must replace it, but its not that expensive. Once you have off the cover surround, you will see the screws that hold on the handle. If you need help getting the part go to http://www.repairclinic.com as even if its not listed get the phone # and call them and they will assist you. Good Luck
