My wife opened the door on the Samsung SMH7185STG 1.8 OTR Microwave, and it came right off. The plastic standoffs (top and bottom) broke. Any ideas for a fix as it appears the entire door must be disassembled to get to the handle screws, even if I could get replacement parts.

Same Here these microwaves are disposable funny thing is that the doors break exactly 1 year from purchase when the warranty expires and we have to pay 250.00 to rectify the problem. What a rip off. I told them I was going to go online to any and all appliance consumer report links and say their model SMH9187W is a joke. The plastic standoff holding the vertical handle is made of plastic. After awhile the post holding the sheetmetal screw fractures and the handle falls off (at least the top or bottom). Mine failed after 14 months.
I used expoxied the post back together and that sort of worked, but then after trying to tighten more to make the bracket sit flush with the door, the post broke off lengthwise. Used a bigger sheet metal screw to temporary hold in place.
Ordered replacement standoff from www.samsungparts.com (DE67-00222C) for $4.75, but the shipping and handling pushed it to $12.

Yesterday was the 2nd time the handle broke off for us. It lasted longer in our case, but it shouldn't break at all. I will call Samsung to see if they have changed their position on this issue, but I have low expectations. I have had the same problem occur twice and you are faced with a $12 purchase to replace them each time. I also have the matching range and the oven door handle caps are metal, a vast improvement. I've sent an e-mail to Samsung, but have got no response. I'm thinking of buying what I hope is the last pair, filling them with epoxy to make them a solid block. My top handle broke off also. The anchor holding the screw crumbled. I just had mine a little over a year. They would not do anything about it. I will never buy any of their products again. Evidently there is a big problem with this and they should do something about this.
The handle on my samsung smh1713s microwave broke twice in one year. we had bought a replacement and that broke too. the plastic is obviously a problem. cheaply made but microwave was not cheap!

Remove the choke cover with the knife blade, starting from the microwave door's top right corner. Pry out the bottom and top right sides, leaving the side which houses the door handle in place.
Remove the choke tabs from their slots on the microwave door frame using the knife blade. Continue to work clockwise around your microwave door; remove the choker cover when you get to your handle's side to separate it from your choke.
Remove the two handles with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the handle from the microwave.
Screw the new handle in the position of the original handle. Lay the choke on the microwave door; set the choke cover right on top of it. Insert the choke tabs into their slots on the microwave door frame using the knife blade.
Secure the two choke screws using a Phillips head screwdriver; set the microwave door back on the bottom bracket. Slide the top pin into the microwave's pivot bracket.
Press the top pin down until it pops securely into place.
Unplug the microwave oven from its power outlet or turn off its circuit breaker. Remove the right fuse from the home fuse-box if your microwave is a built-in model.

Press the top pin down until it pops securely into place.
You can order new "cap handles" (the plastic parts that join the aluminum handle to the door for 3.99 each plus 8.99 shipping and handling at the Sears Parts Direct Website. The part number is DE67-00222C. When you have the parts in hand, open the microwave oven door. On the inside surface of the door their is a black plastic frame around the door that pops off easily (gently use a screw driver to pry up the door frame) so that you can have access to the screws that attach the end caps to the door. You will need to hold the remant of the cap handle (the part that is probably broken off even with the glass surface on the outside side of the door) still while you unscrew the screws. Once the screws and broken remnant of the handle caps are out, you are ready to put new handle caps on the handle, then put the handle with the new handle caps on the door. By the way, Samsung was absolutely NO help with this. The agent I chatted with denied that their were any reports of the handles breaking off, so I had to cut and past the postings about the door handle breaking off ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE under "Community Q and A" into the chat box -- still the agent did not acknowldege the existance of these reports...or the possibility of a poor design. I asked for them to send me a couple of the $4 parts as a good will gesture....got nothing but lofty words about Samsung commitment etc. and only a authorized technition blah blah, no action. All you need is a strong thumbnail, a phillips head screw driver, new handle caps.
Normally you have to
separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo)
and then you'll see the previously hidden screw(s) you need to remove.

made) that demonstrates how it's done.
In some cases, you then
have to gently rotate the handle to unlock it.

in different thread.. Basically have to pry plastic trim ring off inside of door with putty knife (careful, it cracks easily) to get to screws on bottom of door. See second pic. Top screws are easily accessible from inside of door. Spring can easily be replaced by hand once you get adequate access. You'll need a fairly stubby right angle screwdriver (I used a cut-down #2 Phillips bit and small Vice-Grips as a make-do) to get to the screws. Also need Torx (T10, I think) to detach the shock absorber doodads from the door where they attach above the hinges. If you're just starting to take the door apart, be careful when you take out the top 2 screws on the inside-- they hold the inside plastic piece on , but they also hold the whole outer stainless/ glass/ handle piece on. It just slips in at the bottom, so be ready to slide it out when you take these screws out.
I have the same issue. The Handle broke off my GE Microwave Oven (Model JVM1190SY 001). GE does not sell the handle seperately from what I can tell. I just ordered a new door. It's rediculously expensive. I tried to replace the handle with a nice drawer pull but couldn't find a size pull to match and I broke the plastic cover trying to get access to the screws for the handle, which is why I decided to buy the new door. Hopefully installation is not that difficult. This oven was manufactured in 2001, seems the handles have a 7 year life span.
On almost any microwave oven door if you open the door,on the inside part of the door,theres a square plate thats plastic that is a one piece unit that goes all the way around the edge of the door . That held on by little plastic clips that are molded right on the suround and easy to break, so take a small screw driver(of course the ovens unplugged by now) and start at one end and start prying it out inch by inch. Being care full not to crack it. If yop do crack it, you must replace it, but its not that expensive. Once you have off the cover surround, you will see the screws that hold on the handle.
