All the universal remote controls that I've had have come with a fairly comprehensive set of control codes for various appliances. If you don't have the manual you'll have to search online for a pdf relating to your universal which contains these codes.
If the remote does even one function the receiver in the set is not the problem. It is possible if the remote is designed to program to another unit you have it in the wrong mode TV or Vcr or something other than your set.
Try holding down both volume buttons on the front of the set. If the menu comes up use the the volume and channel buttons on the front of the set to navigate in the menu. I hope this helps you.
I'm sorry, but there is no access to the menu without a remote. If you want to try a universal remote, try the codes listed for Orion, Emerson, and Sansui.
