Leviton 6230M Decora Four Preset Electronic Timer White Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 25, 2011

I have two of these switches and they both are operating incorrectly. I use them to control bathroom fans in two separate bathrooms, but they both act the same. That is, when I push one of the time settings they provide only enough power to the fan to barely make it move. When I take the switch out of the equation and hook the two black wires up directly to each other the fan works at full speed. Are these faulty switches or do I have something wired incorrectly? (I can't imagine I have it wired incorrectly since I simply replaced the existing switch with this new one and attached the green ground wire to the other ground wires.) Help!

unfortunately, I apparently gave you the wrong item description number. The correct number is Leviton Decora single pole 5 button Countdown Timer, catalog No. 6161T. 500W incandescent (lighted) 15A, 120VAC, 60 Hz.
I'm trying to use it to control a bathroom fan, but it doesn't power the fan with sufficient energy to make it rotate. Does this timer work for fans?

Leviton countdown timers have additional wire that powers internal electronics.
Leviton timers have red-black-white-green wires (or blue-black-white-green wires)

1) Regular single pole switch has 2 insulated wires. One of these wires is Hot from breaker, and the other goes to Load (fan)
2) Timer green wire connects to bare ground as you know.
3) Hot from breaker connects to timer black wire.
4) Load wire connects to timer red (or blue) wire.

5) Located in back of box are white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire nut.
These are Neutral wires. Connect timer white to these wires. This will power timer electronics.
6) If box does not have Neutral wires described above, then connect timer white to bare ground along with timer green wire.

7) Turn power ON and try timer countdown.
If timer does not work, then reverse timer red and timer black wire.

8) If box does not have neutral wires: Image on link below shows similar Intermatic timer:
Image applies ONLY when Neutral is not available.

Search shows Leviton 6161 is "incandescent dimmer" and not a countdown timer.http://www.amazon.com/Leviton-6161-I-Dec...
To see cross-section of countdown timers: http:waterheatertimer.org/Countdown.html All timers shown on 2nd link will work for bathroom fan (not heavy enough for whole house attic fan except FD and FF series). You can buy inexpensive countdown timers at local Home Center. Notice each countdown timer has times printed on face of timer. They are displayed with the timers. Or buy Leviton 6260 60-minute or 6230 30-minute on-line. Wiring for countdown is shown in first response.

How do you connect up a ferrob bathroom fan

You need a little knowledge on basic electricity to do this. Your fan has two wires. You may connect it directly to the bathroom light or to a separate switch circuit.

A Bryant 3 way independent rocker switch with red, black and white wires for 3 lights in bathroom one switch not working can i replace it with a Broan Nutone P66V three function control

397bfdd.jpgLeviton triple switch
fe442eb.jpgNutone P66V

Nutone looks like an ordinary three-switch combo being marketed as a bathroom 'fan switch.'
The screws on the device would tell the story.

Look at the Leviton screws:
The switch has dark-colored screw on one side >> the hot from breaker always connects to dark screws.
Other side of switch has 3 silver-colored screws, but these can be brass colored screws > the wires to fan light and heater connect to each of these screws.

Most likely the Nutone switch is identical to the Leviton
I say this because the descriptor on Amazon describes it as a 'fan' switch.
It's being marketed as a bathroom fan-light combo switch >>> so it looks like an ordinary three-combo switch

I need help hooking up my bathroom fan and light i have three wires going to the bathroom fan and light white black and ground i want a swith to turn off the bathroom light one to run the light to the fan...

Right now a single switch turns on both light and fan.
You want to put in a double switch to control light and fan separately.

But the problem is there is not a separate wire to each the light and fan.
You need a separate wire to each, but the circuit wasn't wired that way.
Usually when the circuit is wired for separate control, there is a red wire that also goes to ceiling box.

Unless you run another wire to the ceiling box, it won't be possible to control light and fan separately.

Electrician can do this pretty easily if there is attic space above bathroom.

How do i hook up a two function swith i have white black and ground going to the fan and the light and anther white black and ground coming from my bathroom light i want to have a switch to turn my...

Ok you only have two switches, so you would use one switch for your bathroom light, and the other for both the fan and the light, the light will come on when you turn the fan on.Connect the incoming black (hot) wire to both switches. Then connect the black wire to the switch you want for your light. Connect the other black to the second switch that goes to your fan and light. Connect the three white wires together (neutral) Connect all ground wires together, and leave a pigtail to connect to the ground terminal on the light switch. If you want separate switches for light in the fan and fan, you will need another conductor and a three gang switch.

Triple rocker switch to control 3 function bathroom fan/light

I suggest you cut 3 pigtails out of your black wire (about 5-6" each and strip them so you can put a nut to tie them all together on the main wire, then do the same for your grounds using green 5-6" strips of wire and then connect all 3 switches with the pigtails to their proper locations. This WILL fix your problem.

Wiring Bathroom light/vent/heater switch with 3 separate controls

Wiring a bathroom combination vent, heater, light 3 way switch means more wires. In brief, you need to run two cables - one a two wire and one a three wire from the switch to the fan.

Incoming power will have white black and ground.

The two wire cable for the switch to the fan will have wht, blk, and ground.

The three wire will have red, blk, wht, and grnd.

The switch will likely have 2 blacks and a red coming from it, with two blacks and a red on one side, and a single black on the other.

The fan should have a red, blue, green, black, and white.

On the fan end: Group all green/copper grounds together and use a wire nut to fasten them together. Tape the nut to the wires.
There will be five white wires coming through. For ease of handling, using wire nuts, connect two on one nut and three on the other.
connect the blue to a blck. Connect one red to one black, and the other red to the other black.

The switch will have one red going into the 3 wire cable, a black going to the 3 wire cable, and a black form incoming power to the side opposite the 3 wires, and a blck going to the two wire cable.

There. Confused?

Wireing a bathroom extractor fan to a three switch (fan=landing light=offswitch0

yes, if the three switches are all made together, then there is only one feed. sounds like a bad switch, or possibly bad exhaust fan. check voltage at fan with switch on, if not qualified, be careful, or call an electrician
