You have a 6 year tank-type low-nox gas water heater
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/products/ByCategory.aspx?id=1
Google search 'low nox' for more details about low nox type water heaters that burn fuel so less NO2 irritant is vented into atmosphere.

Owner's manual:
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/downloads/6510397.pdf

1) You said 'reset button.' Only mention of 'reset' in manual is about FVIR flammable vapor ignition system where water heater shuts off when exposed to vapors that might catch fire or explode:
This model appears to have Whirlpool's new resettable FVIR so read instructions in manual for resetting FVIR. If FVIR will not reset using instructions, then call whirlpool at 1-877-817-6750

2) You said 'won't stay lit.' Manual has troubleshooting flowchart starting on page 24.
There are 13 items listed for pilot won't stay lit, with possible remedy for each.
There are 9 things for burner will not light, with remedies.
Call whirlpool at 1-877-817-6750

3) Save manual posted above. I install water heaters and tell everyone to read and save manual to empower them to help themselves.

4) Call a plumber for service.

5) Add a comment for more free help
Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, expert speaks with you over phone while you work on water heater or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

Sw6p suburban won't stay lit. My 6 gallon hot water heat on my 2007 camper won't stay lit, I go and light the pilot light and it lights but I turn the gas up and it blows out please help

the thermal couple is likely bad .
when you release does pilot stay lit or only as long as you hold the button .

if it stays lit then the thermal couple is good
if it only blows out as you turn on the heat then its draft issue.

Reliance 606 Hot water Heating element (Pilot light) won't stay lit

Gas water heaters don't have elements, so I am confused about what type water heater you have..
Look on the side of tank for the label.
Find the brand, and type. Does it show BTUs? Or does it show wattage?
Then re-post question with this information, for best possible answer.
Also post question on Tank forum.

Pilot won't stay lit, replaced thermalcouple but

I would remove pilot light assembly and clean orifice and blow out gas line to pilot. Check to see that thermocouple is centered in pilot flame. It is possiblethat your gas valve is bad but it is also possible that you got a defective thermocouple. I would change the thermocouple again as they are much less expensive then the gas valves. The next time when you are sure you have the thernocouple mounted as close to the center of the pilot flame hold the pilot button down for several mins. If none of this works then you may have to change your gas valve.Thank you.

Burner on new Whirlpool gass water heater will not stay lit

One of the proper ways to light a gas water heater, is to turn the black knob to Pilot, put a match to the end of the pilot light, while holding the match there, push the red reset button down and hold the match & the reset button down for one full minute. Then, release the reset button and turn the black knob to On. This should keep the pilot light on.
