The sound-output levels from the iPod are designed for "ear-bud" speakers, i.e., very low levels.

In contrast, your speakers require an amplifier to push 10 to 30 watts to the speakers.

The "long" answer is to use a cable to connect the audio-out from the iPod to an audio-in port on a stand-alone amplifier, and use speaker-wire to connect the amplifier to your speakers.
