SOURCE: Lacie 320 GB Hard Drive acting as if full when it's not.

Simplest solution: back up the data on the drive and repartition it (which will wipe it). Otherwise it sounds like it could be a problem with the file tree or structure of the drive, the configuration files could be corrupt, some program could have stored temporary files in a hidden place that cannot be deleted without making the program delete them, etc. If you are on a mac, spotlight Disk Utility and use it to repartition. If you are on a PC use the search thing from the start menu and find a program called disk management (or something similar to that, you'll know it when you see it.) external drives are annoying. i kick mine into the wall periodically for good measure.

SOURCE: Lacie extern. hard drive is recognized, but I can't access files

Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty.
You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

SOURCE: Macintosh computer not recognizing the LaCie external hard drive

First thing to check is whether the Mac recognises the LaCie hardware. Go to the Apple icon, and select 'About this Mac/Computer' then more info, which will launch System Profiler, check the FireWire section under Hardware to see if your drive is listed. Assuming it is, and that the Disk Utility program doesn't see the drive, then you'll need a Disk analysis program like 'Drive Genius' or a recovery program like 'Disk Warrior'
Should your drive not be seen under the FireWire section, you have an interface failure on the LaCie, which isn't terminal, you'll just need to put the drive in another HD case and then read the data. Reply to this and I'll try and give more help depending on the results you get in System Profiler.

SOURCE: cant delete files off external

Hello,
this sometimes happens when you delete files partially. Deleting file normally will send it to the Trash (MAC) or Recycle Bin (PC) . The file is not really deleted at that point. Make sure to empty the Trash or Recycle Bin and the space should be freed.
If this does not work, copy all needed files somewhere else, then format the drive.

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

I have the Lacie Minidisk Ethernet 500 GB that contains all my house PC backup. I both an USB Minidisk Lacie (1 GB) in order to use MySafe feature but it never worked.

Hello Elio,

Use MySafe to back up the files stored on the Ethernet Disk mini Home to an attached USB storage device. This way, if files on the Ethernet Disk mini are damaged or accidentally deleted, you can restore them to their original locations.
There are three main steps to using MySafe,Connecting an external USB hard drive,Backing up files to the external USB hard drive,Restoring files to the Ethernet Disk mini (if necessary)
Before you can back up files, you need to connect a hard drive to your Ethernet Disk mini via the USB port on the back. Use a hard drive that is USB 2.0 compatible.
While connecting an external hard drive make sure your Ethernet Disk mini is turned on and connected to your network.Turn on the external USB hard drive.Connect the external hard drive's USB cable to the USB port on the back of the Ethernet Disk mini, just like you would connect the external hard drive to your computer.Confirm that the drive is properly connected. Log in and click on the Administer HipServ link. Click on USB External Storage under System.
To back up files, navigate to the file or folder you want to back up to the external hard drive and click on the disk icon in the "Backup" column of the file list. When you back up files to MySafe, the Ethernet Disk mini duplicates the file path in MySafe so that everything you back up is organized in MySafe just as in its original location. So, if you copy a file from MyLibrary, a MyLibrary folder will appear in MySafe, with all folders leading to the backed up file.

Always click the Safely Remove Drive button on the USB External Storage before unplugging your MySafe external hard drive. Wait for the interface to change and for the Use Drive button to appear before disconnecting the USB cable from the Ethernet Disk mini. Failure to safely remove your external hard drive before disconnecting the USB cable can cause data loss and/or damage the drive. Always use the Safely Remove Drive feature when disconnecting an external hard drive.

The icon for my lacie exyernal hard does not show

Here's two suggestions. (If your using Mac OS X 10.x)
Make sure external hard drives are to be shown by clicking "Finder" in the menu bar then "Preferences" and under the "Sidebar" section selecting "External Disks".
Also check that the hard drive is mounting by opening "Disk Utility" by first opening the "Applications" folder then the "Utilities" folder and double clicking "Disk Utility" and in the left sidebar checking to see if your external hard drive is listed as one of the mounted drives. Hope this helps, don't forget to comment/vote if this helped. Thank you.

How do I view the files in my LaCie backup folder? The show hidden files/folders option is checked and I still can't see anything.

It appears you have an external hard drive. It should connect to your computer with a USB cable. Make sure the external hard drive is turned on and running before you connect the usb cable to the computer. Some external hard drives have an on/off switch and some do not. you can hear it running if you put your ear close to the case.

When you plug it in, wait a few minutes and the computer should indicate that it has recognized it. (sometimes this does not happen) In any case, after a few minutes, open My Computer (Computer, in Windows 7) (sometimes referred to as Explorer- NOT to be confused with Windows Explorer which is an internet browser). You should see a list of recognized drives including your external hard drive. Doubler click on it and you should be able to see your files.

If it doesn't show in Explorer, the computer might be trying to assign a drive letter to it that is already taken. To fix that, go to Control panel, Administrator Tools, Computer management, Disk Management. You should see your external drive listed and you can assign an unused drive designation to it there. You should then be able to go back to Explorer and see it. You might have to refresh the Explorer screen.

External hard drive not openning

Good News, Your data is probably still safe. Go to best buy or online and buy a new cheap external usb case for your harddrive. you can find them for about 7-25 bucks. Make sure you get the right one for the hard drive in your lacie. Take the hard drive out of the lacie case and put it in the cheap case and you will have your data back. I had this happen to me before. If you need help just ask me... Hope this helps you

Firewire problem I think - I have a Sony Vaio laptop, the firewire port is 4 pin, it is connected to a LaCie CD Burner via 6 pin and the burner is daisy chained to a AcomData external hard drive via 6 pin....

If the hub has an external power supply it migh do the trick. That way you can have a backup port if needed.

Make sure the hard drive isn't connected to the hub. Sometime windows doesn't see it when its connected to a hub.
