The think pad dead

The think pad will not boot. A screen comes up asking that the user to depress the blue Thinkpad vantage key to interrupt normal boot but that does nothing. Fixya is not Lenovo, so.....but I ask here and not on lenovo forum real.

No boot. SL500 notebook. 10 years old now? 2008 made.

no failed screen photo posted. making answers near impossible to guess what is there on screen.
PC's boot in serial sequence.
Power on
BIOS posts. (power on self test and possible errors)

then asks for BIOS PASSword (bad thing to have and forget) never turn this feature on.
then if Bitlocker was turned on you must get this password next, if lost doom it is for HDD.'

next the HDD boots the OS. (or fails with errors)
what OS is this, windows (what) or Linux (hat) or freedos, or well lots more OS.
let my guess its windows. so the next step is
windows password, is this where you get stuck.

this messages (means recovery mode) in english.
To interrupt normal startup, press the
blue ThinkVantage button"

it is the BIOS hot key for recovery.
if the bios password is not set then BIOS works.

My guess is your HDD is bad, and cant boot.
you read the manual, (did you) and see the recovery chapter. and then attempt the recovery
and that works , good, but if not that means the HDD is bad, or damaged.'
page 41 covers how to use factory recover disk

If you need help , next time tell the helper
what OS came new with PC and was it upgraded.
to say w10. WE CAN NEVER GUESS what
OS is there (operating system)

not only that but recover steps
    vary by OS you have.
    for example vista has nothing.
newer OS has lots more. choices.
what we do is :(SHOP Skills)
1: ID the OS there. what is it.?
2: we then run disktests, HDD, if bad the HDD must be replaced. (I use linux demo to test hdd)
3: if not bad we try to do OS recovers built in to say w7 up.(even try F8 safe mode)
4: if a new hdd is needed, you need to buy a new OS. and install that last.

SOURCE: Not booting past windows screen

I suggest you boot up with your XP installation disk and run a repair - don't use the repair console use the Repair facilty that comes after that screen

Restore factory settings

Restart the Computer and keep tapping the F8 key till you see the advance boot options, You should be tapping the key as soon as you see the manufactures screen. Once you get the advance boot options -> Select the option which says Repair your Computer once its Selected click next on the Keyboard Layout Option, Now it would ask you for a User name and Password, Click on the User name Tab and select User/Owner extra and Type in your password if the computer has one if not you can leave that field blank, then click on next, Now on the recovery options screen you would be able to choose System Restore, Command Prompt extra. I think with the issue your facing System Restore would be the best Option to do.
Good Luck!!!!!

Hello, I have very old IBM ThinkPad laptop that I never use anymore. Now I remembered that I have some files on it I have to get (also websites that I had put on favorites). When I try to turn on the...

Hi.

I think the boot order on the laptop has been changed and the laptop is trying to boot from the LAN (NIC/Ethernet) port.

To change the boot order you need to access the BIOS. On older IBM laptops (and this is dependant on the model) the BIOS Utility is entered by holding F2 while the ThinkPad logo is displayed after power on, or, with the unit powered off, hold the F1 key and power the unit on. Keep F1 held down until Easy setup appear. The key is either F1 or F2.

On other models there is a blue Access IBM button when the message "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" is displayed to enter the ThinkVantage Productivity Center, then select Start setup utility to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

once in the BIOS look for the boot order of the computer and change the boot order to the HDD (hard disk drive). There will be instructions on the screen on how to change the boot order. Save the changes and restart the laptop. Hopefully it will now boot into the hard drive and load the operating system.

Hope this helps!!!

Regards.

My T23 IBM enters splash screen, but will not enter the bios page.

While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed.

Blue screen help

Try doing this
1. Boot to your windows XP cd
2. On the welcome to setup screen press "R" to go to recovery console
3. It might ask to select a drive to letter something like that just choose the number represent "x:/windows" then press enter
4. If it asks for admin password just press enter (most system has a blank password for admin user as a default)
5. Type "chkdsk /r /p" on the command prompt
6. This might take 1-2 hours depending on your computer.

Hope this helps...
