My exploding glass door was on a Whirlpool double oven which they have refused to do anything about as it was one month over the 2 year warranty - the poblem seems to be that the handle is attached directly to the glass so possible the glass is already stressed and when it was cooling down after use just shutting the door caused it to disintegrate into tiny shards

If you are in Canada there is a government run organisation called TSSA regulates gas fired appliances. They would be interested in hearing about your story.

SOURCE: Oven Door Exploded

This fault has occurred on a number of these ovens and I've seen it happen occasionally on other makes and models.

The explosion is spectacular, but is actually due to a safety feature as all modern ovens which use glass doors must use toughened glass. This is heat-treated glass which is resistant to most knocks, but when it does break it shatters into lots of small granules instead of sharp edged shards.

In use, heat makes everything on the oven expand a little and afterwards everything cools down and returns to normal size. The problem is that the glass and metals do not expand or contract at the same rate and so there's always the chance that the differential expansion between the glass door and the metal hinges can put enough stress on the door to make it shatter. The engineers who designed your oven knew this and will have tried to ensure that the hinge design could cope, but it may be that they didn't do well enough.

The other possibility is that the door has a manufacturing fault: when toughened glass is manufactured the glass gets a lot of stress built into it (that's why it seems to explode when it breaks). After the glass has cooled down in the factory every one is supposed to undergo a couple of simple automated tests which will either cause the glass to immediately shatter or will cause it to be returned to the ovens to have the excess stresses removed. Sometimes these tests are not fully effective at identifying the "bad apples".

I'd strongly advise you to contact the manufacturer of your oven as the door should not fail in normal use even beyond the warranty period. What you have suggests a design or manufacturing fault and you may be offered a free repair without admission of liability.

Has anyone had a problem with the inner glass on the Lamona oven door exploding. Mine just has! It's only 18 months old and hardly used. I wonder if it's the difference in temperature betweeen the hot oven...

We bought our kitchen from Howden's as well about 15 months ago. They installed a Lamona double oven and hob. Last night when opening the door to the bottom oven our glass on the inner door exploded as well. Maybe there was a batch of defective ovens as ours sounds as though they mat have been bought/manufactured at the same time.

My oven inside glass door exploded tonight while

Very rare, in 35 years I replace maybe 2 to 5 a year out of 1500 to 2000 repairs a year on all major appliances. Make sure you replace it with the exact glass from the manufacturer, usuing your model number. Do not replace with glass from a glass shop.

Inner glass shattered while on broil temperature. How does this happen? I will call service, but my over is about 8 months old. This is very dissapointing

It is really just coincedence if you hadnt bout it then somone else would have and they would feel like you feel now. It was probably a small crack or defect just outside eye view in your oven door or just a bad piece of glass that wasnt hardened just right. There isnt a large volume of these happening on your model# and I wouldnt worry about it. Stuff just happens, plus this opens a door for you most buyers wont have. If something else happens in say 3 years the control board shorts out. You then call Whirlpool and tell them they should have replaced the unit from the start cause you think its a lemon. Since you had issues with it in the first year, they will usually cover any repair and parts cost for you even though most appliances only have a one year warranty on them. Lastly, no this was not a cheap purchase and yes it does stink that it broke but at least it did happen while in warranty. Just tryin to help you make lemonade with your lemons. Hope I helped.

The glass on the microwave door on the outside has slipped down and there is no screws to take apart the door and fix the glass. Does this fall under the warranty? My 5 years is up on 12/01/09.

I would contact customer service (for Amana, Frigidaire, Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Litton, Maytag, Roper, Tappan, Thermador and Whirlpool) here about the warranty and to find your nearest authorized servicer.

If not, it's pretty easy to fix this yourself.

There are probably broken tabs on the inner or outer door panel.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

You can find handy exploded views and order parts by model number here.

Whirlpool glass door exploded in my face! A serious defect!

I would go to a Lawyer unless you have a serious voltage problem. Whirlpool makes pretty good appliances. To have probems with all of them is very unusual. Look for a comon problem. You have not stated your outher problems. I have heard about oven glass breaking with no reason.
