When I turn on my Kenmore Premier 4.5 Peak HP 10.0 Amp
after about a minute of running I get a burning smell. When I opened up the compartment that holds the dust collection bag, and remove the bag I found a filter. The filter was minimally dusty and has been cleaned. After sniffing around, I could not identify the source of the smell.

If the burning smell is an electrical smell it could be motor or wiring problems which are best handled by a professional. If it smells like burning rubber it is probably the belt. If it smells like burnt wood it could be the belt slipping on the brush roll, if the brush roll is made of wood. Dust and debris can also accumulate behind the end caps of the brush roll causing friction which can cause a burning wood smell.
Take the spark plug out, turn ignition key or pull rope until the engine turns over several times. Let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes and repeat. Replace the spark plug with a new one. Make sure that your crankcase is not over filled or under filled with oil, and make sure that there is plenty of gasoline in the tank. Make sure that gasoline cap and oil cap are on "securely". Now try to re-start. (The engine may smoke for a while, but it should clear up in a few minutes).
The smell is usually the fan belt. When the brush is stuck in place, the belt spins and burns. Check to see if the brush is free to spin. If the Belt is burnt, it needs to be replaced.
The foam you see is probably there as a noise suppressor. It shouldn't be curled up but age and heat
can do that. If the odor is an electrical smell that may mean the motor is going bad.
You must take of the plastic ends from the wood beater bar and make sure the metal axels are not wound up with hair. I did this monthly with 4daughters
is that the one with the direct drive brushroll? those brushroll motors inside the brushroll always go bad. that is one of the worst designs from kenmore. is the brushroll turning?
Had a burning smell coming from the vacuum. Opened it up and noticed sparks in the motor area. Ordered a new motor from Sears and replaced it. Works great now.
