I have 2 Stihl 020T chainsaws with the same problem they work ok for a while and I am talking about 5 minutes tops then its like they run out of fuel sometimes will start right back up but most of the time you have to wait - this is what I have done so far - rebuilt the carbs (2) times, replaced fuel filter in tank, checked the fuel pick up hose

Check for spark immediately after it shuts down. Could be a weak ignition coil.

A search for 020T netted a source of both the IPL and shop manual by cjcocn (send him? a PM) for one there are probably other sources.

If it's not getting spark with a new plug, then it may be the module ignition (coil). But you really need to get in a dark area and try to see if it's getting spark. If it is getting spark let me know, I should still be able to help you.

It is a fuel / air problem. Do you have a primer bulb, did you replace it and put it in the right way around arrow to the carb? It is a known issue. There are lots of help online and there are some videos below..

020T wont start and leaking engine oil

The 020T has no engine oil, it is a 2 cycle. The oil you are seeing is unburnt oil and gas from the combustion process, perfectly normal. It may also be from trying to start it because fuel may be entering the motor when you are pulling the rope, the excess fuel will eventually make its way out of the muffler. The no start could be a number of issues, but I'd start with fresh fuel and reviewing the starting procedure for a Stihl saw.

I have a MS270,Stihl. It runs for around 5 minutes then shuts off. I take the air filter off and and replace it then it starts again. The area around the air filter is damp with fuel.

Sounds like splash back from carb . Can be several things. first would clean carb or replace. That may just solve the powering down part. Or it can be that it is running way to lean and just overheating the saw. Try to adjust carb till it blubbers , and then turn back till it runs well. To lean and it will burn up the engine.

I have this problem with my saw every 5 years,, first thing to check would be to see if the fuel hose has any cracks in it ~~ 9 times out of 10 the cracks are where the hose enters the fuel tank ( at the bend ).
after you check that and you are still having problems please feel free to write me back and we can move on to the next thing to look at.

it sounds like a fuel issue. on my Stihl (390 )saw I had that same problem and I found that the fuel line inside the fuel tank was kinked and split and sucking air ( not fuel ). also check to make sure your gas oil mix is correct ( start fresh when in doubt ). it also can be a idle issue ( Fast idle or Slow idle ), but since you just had it serviced - I would look at the fuel line and fuel first. please let me know what you find and if that does or does not solve your problem,, there are a few more things to check. ( also - check to see if the air filter is clean and clear ,, brush it off if dirty ).
