Why does a flashing A show up in the answering machine display?

There is no user manua l available for this model anywhere.The only way to get the manual is to call the Main support number at 1-800-626-2005 and tell them to email you a copy of it.

You have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone.

Please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.

Looks like the basic functions of the phone are correct. Remain the answering machine. Are you sure it can act as an answering machine?
If it can act as answering machine the reason it is not doing so may be the following.

1. Answering function is turned OFF
2. Answering function may be ON but the number of rings before it answers is set too high.

I suggest you try the following
Call you phone. Let it ring at least 10 times. If it can act as an answering machine it will pick up the phone and read the welcome message, because most answering machines (the recent ones at least) answer after 10 rings even if answering function is turned OFF.

The phones that can be answering machines usually do have a display that shows the number of incoming messages, or a LED that flashes to let you know that you have new recorded messages.

1. Press the FLASH/program button until 1ENG 2FRA 3ESP shows in the display.
2. Use the CID/VOL (left or right arrow) button or the handset number pad to
select 1 (English), 2 (French), or 3 (Spanish). The default setting is "1ENG".
3. Press the FLASH/program button to confirm and to advance to the next menu
feature.

All that You need do is re-program Your machine as You did when You first set it up. The flashing cl shows up if there is a power outage and if Your machine is not backed up ith a battery to help save phone info.

An overnight rest seemed to cure it. Context - I have a fax machine also hooked up to it that kicks in when it hears the fax signal. I disconnected it overnight while "resting" the answering machine. When the answering machine returned to normal this morning, I hooked up the fax again. So far so good.

Flashing CL means that your clock is not set.

I had the same problem. I do have the manuel which does not state what the codes are. I called the help line and they said it was a low battery. I hope this helps you.
