If you're running Windows XP, and you see a message saying "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file.". This usually means one of the running application is a badly programmed application, and is absorbing too much memory and is the cause of the problem.
Instead increasing virtual memory paging size, you need to find out what program is giving you troubles, and eventually reinstall it.
Here is how to identify applications using memory in a bad way.
Here is info on RAM, Virtual Memory, etc. If you did not find any suspect application using a large amount of memory, then try increasing virtual memory paging size

And finally HERE is how to increase virtual memory paging size in Windows XP.

And HERE how to increase virtual memory on Vista.

I don't wish to sound rude but if you don't know how to do this, you prolly should just let windows continue managing it. A few wrong keystrokes can have major repurcussions

How can i free space for my virtual memory ?i don't need a solution for increasing the size of virtual memory instead i want to free space that has been occupied in the virtual memory.

Hey, You got to free space on your hard drive. The virtual memory resides on your hard drive. but if the hard drive is getting full, this will reduce the virtual memory. So make home for virtual memory by free space on your hard drive.

Opening programs is so slow virtual memory running low

which operating system you are using and what is the ram capacity? and onemore thing to check what is your virtual memory capacity. for that

Right click "mycomputer" > properties > advanced >click settings on performance > in advanced tab > increase virtual memory file size.
generally its size is ram capacity * 2 (ex: for 512mb its virtual memory size is 1GB) check that and we can increase the file size also.

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW MUCH VIRTUAL MEMORY DOES A PATRIOT 2006 LAPTOP HAVE

Virtual memory?

Virtual memory is created and used by windows operating system.
This value can be changed and solely depends on the hard drive space available.

Simply put There isnt any limit, nor a minimum. The amount of virtual memory depends on how much was set up and can be increased or decreased at any time.

The purpose of virtual memory is to allow windows to use part of your hard drive as rams.

virtual memory and rams (conventional memory are different things)
you can have as much or as little as u need. increasing it improves performance.

So No one can actually answer that question. Simply put any amount you want is the correct answer!.

I have an IBM thinkpad T20 running windows 2000. The computer is on and booted up but the monitor is not lighting up. It is running on 256mb ram and I was getting a lot of virtual memory is low warnings...

To determine if the laptop has a problem with the inverter of low virtual memory issues, plug an external monitor in to the laptop and you can change the virtual memory by following these instructions, right click on my computer, select properties, then select advanced, click on virtual memory and change the settings to system detemined, save settings and reboot the laptop without the external monitor to see if it is virtual memory or inverter.
Please keep me informed
