Reboot windows without any CD in drive and tap F8 key before windows screen appears. Select safe mode from the menu that appears and elect to do a system restore.
If this doesn't work you could try changing the boot order in the bios ensuring that your hard drive is first boot device. should get into bios when starting PC usually F2 or del key. remember to save changes in bios normally F10

After installing the drivers and software for my Canoscan 5600f then plugging in the scanner I get the following error message: "There was a problem installing this hardware. An error occurred...

Hello hayduke247
You must absolutely make sure you are using the correct driver for the correct device :
Windows Vista / 7 :
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/scanners/film_negative_scanners/canoscan_5600f#DriversAndSoftware
Other Windows versions :
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010652.asp
To correctly delete a program , use a specific tool rather than the windows deleting program : Download free RevoUninstaller from http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html
If all this doesn' t work , your device is defective , not your software .
Best regards ,
