I just purchased a used XL15s. The unit when in manual mode emits an oder, but the air feels oxygenated. When you breath close to the machine the air seems to irritate or kinda burn my eyes. When in auto the air feels and smells like the existing room air. Is this normal?

This is what the machine is designed to do! The machine emits a low amount of ozone, which is the purifier/sanitizer created by sunlight. Close to the machine, it's concentrated. When it spreads throughout the room, it kills odors and bacteria, and creates the fresh smell of clean air. The air truly is "oxygenated," because ozone is simply O3, instead of O2, and breaks down quickly.
If the numbered dial is set too high (try it at 300 to 500) it will smell "bleachy." Your "rule of thumb" is that when you've been away, and enter the home, you should experience the same fresh, clean smell that you get when you step outdoors on a bright spring or winter day.
When you're doing something that creates odors, like frying fish or cooking sauerkraut, turn the dial up to take care of that odor quickly, then turn it down for normal operation.
Leave it on the manual setting for continual purification. Often, the auto setting has been disabled, which might be the case in your older machine. (These machines can be 12-15 years old!) For an owners manual, go to www.vollara.com (new name of Ecoquest/Alpine). They may be able to help you.

Alliance Healthdyne oxygen concentrator alarm doesn't stop when turning the unit on.

There are parts inside that machine that have fixed hour ratings. When they are needing to be replaced, that machine has to be serviced. Since it is not an over the counter device, you need to contact a medical specialty vendor and have it worked on. There is no parts available.

I would doubt that high ozone levels are causeing your problems. It is possible if your house is not properly ventilated for ozone to be hazardous so I would recommend that you cut the time that you are using your air purifier in half and for the next 2-3 months I would change furnace filters on a weekly basis. Also clean all carpets and drapes to remove all tobaco residue. I hope this helps you and that you all start feeling better.Thank you.

Is the oreck xl professicnal air purifier a safe unit

...and so you should be! Worried, I mean. And not just about this particular machine. Ozone is an atmospheric pollutant (good news up in the stratosphere - bad news down here where we breathe it) and primary irritant of mammalian airways. It is a powerful oxidizer of organic matter, so it kills bacteria (good news) and can adversely affect anything else organic that it comes into contact with - leather, rubber, and you (bad news).
Personally, writing as a qualified chemist and biologist, I would not want to be in the same house as an ozone generator, let alone be in the same room as one.
If you really feel the need to "purify" your air. Do it without generating a toxic impurity!

Fresh air 2.0: Unit cycles on and off.

The problem is dust or moisture on one or more of the circuit boards, in the bottom of the unit. The problem is usually caused by resetting the cleaning reminder without actually cleaning the machine. ;-) It hasn't been difficult for me to solve so far. Remove the filter. Remove the two screws that hold on the plate where the rear switch is located. The wires are long enough that they don't need to be removed from the switch. Use a blow dryer or dry compressed air to blow off the circuit boards. ****Keep your face out of the way!!! Be sure not to get the blow dryer too close or too hot. If you have a Warm setting, use that. Good luck!

Ionic pro turbo

Yes.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to be making a decision on all ionizers. It's possible by the end of the year that no one will be selling them anymore.

This industry should have been regualated years ago even after the EPAs own reports on their own website.

XL-15 Classic Living Air emmitting Foul Odor!!

Ionizers do cause a bad odor to happen. I work in the copier business and do work around machines that can cause an ozone to happen when there are ran. Copiers like ionizers can cause an ozone to happen because the air particles are being electrically charged. The smell isn't good to be breathing in as well.

Here is an EPA report about ionizers

The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to be making a decision about the health effects on ionizers by the end of the year. Their decision can effect selling ionizers all together.

This industry should have been regulated years ago and after what happened to Sharper Image this year due to their arrogance it isn't doing the industry any favors. They went out of business because of Consumer Reports findings and tried to sue them for it.

If you really want the air in your house cleaned, the best way to do it is using a hepa filter.
