That kind of device must be plug and play in case windows wont recognize it after hooking it to the USB forth, there must be a problem of the USB connection, check the USB out of the recorder, the USB cord and the USB forth of the computer...
If it came with a driver..just run the driver again in the computer and be sure the installation goes OK ..After that restart the PC ..and plug the recorder..it should see it if this was the issue ..Another thing is to plug the device powered and on ..and check the screen of the recorder ..cause sometimes you have to confirm the pc connection ..or ..card reading ..from it ..
If you do not have a driver just check the manufacturer's site..and see if it needs one or it is a plug and play device ..if it is a plug and play ..try to reset the recorder..(look for the reset button in a hole accessible with a stylus or sharp object ) or ..in the menu ..select the reset to factory settings ..
In the last case you will have to reinstall the firmware in the recorder cause it is damaged and not seen by the usb port ..This is the case for those that are plug and play ..and have the driver in the root folder and accidentally deleted..
If it is not damaged or so ..follow these instructions to install the driver built in ..

anyway ..plug it and check the my computer folder and see if it has a separate drive for its root (may be in the disk drive sections )

As far as the instructions from the mfg. page you refered me to: when I pull up "My Computer"
there is no driver Icon showing on that page, just the drives are shown. I'm running windows-XP. I searched for a driver with out luck on the RCA as well as the Audiovox sites, they have no number to call for customer support and when I try to conatact them the "contact us" button does not work on the website. the model number of the voice recorder is VR5230-A msde by RCA. When I plug in the unit It says pclink but I get a baloon that pops up at the bottom of the sreen that says "windows does not recognize this USB device" When I open RCA's digital drvice manager it does not show the device the same is true in "My Computer" Thats all I can think of hope someone ther can help. Thank you
