My Yamaha htr-5990 7.1 receiver has developed a 60hz hum which is equall in all speaker outputs. The hum is present with nothing connected to the receiver except speakers and is completely independent of every setting change. I believe I have a bad filter capacitor on the power supply. I have identified two large 71v 12000 microfarrad capacitors which I suspect are failing, however there is no physical evidence of damage. How might I confirm that replacing these would solve the problem and where might I purchase such capacitors? Thanks.

SOURCE: yamaha htr-5990 Reciever powers on

Hi larryavent

The unit is going into protection mode. Check you speaker cabling and connections for short circuits and frayed ends. Best way to test for speaker or related problems is to disconnect the speaker wiring from the amp and try again. If it still has the symptoms with no cables connected then it will have an internal fault. Unless you have experience with this type of gear, there is not much that is user serviceable inside. A trip to a Yamaha Service center may be in order.

Graeme

SOURCE: Yamaha HTR-6130 Front right and left speakers with no sound

As simple as this sounds, try hitting the speaker a/b button on the front of the unit, next to the headphone jack. I had the same problem, and was about to package the whole thing back up and go back to Best Buy when I hit this button and then the audio test worked.

Is it going into protect mode???
If so, check your speaker connections. Make sure there are no loose copper wires hanging out, and that your splices are clean at both the receiver and the speaker.

SOURCE: no compressed audio on hdmi

You probably need to take that issue up with the setup of the unnamed device originating the signal.

Can I connect two 4 ohm speakers to make it play on single 8 ohm speaker channel on a receiver

Yes, two 4 ohm speakers wired in series will present an 8 ohm load, though even with matched speakers they are likely to produce different volume levels.

It is probable the receiver will be quite happy using a single 4 ohm speaker if only modest volume levels are used. Many popular hi-fi amps quote power outputs for both 4 and 8 ohm indicating either could be used.

I have yamaha htr-5990 it only has 6 ohms to 8 ohms I just bought some Bose 401 there 4 ohms will this work or will it wreck receiver or sound bad

If you want blown output transistors then connect your 4 ohm speakers. Swap them for some 6 to 8 ohms. You can go higher with ohms, say 16 ohms, but NEVER lower than rated.

My Yamaha HTR 5990 started getting hot and kept cutting off

Depending what happened is the key to solving this, chances are the audio outputs got very hot causing a short which overheated the capacitor, I would inspect and test parts near by to be sure no other part has been compromized. Check all speaker wires for shorts, "a common problem" and take your time when servicing, if unsure! have a professional assess.

Well i have a yamaha natural sound av receiver htr-5660 and ive connected 200 watt speakers and my problem is my tweeters are only working and i would to like know step by step to on how to get the...

"200 watt speaker" is meaningless. What brand and model? Be advised that stripping parts from an all-in-one audio package for redeployment with 'standard' audio components doesn't guarantee compatibility or safe function.

Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com

The amp has selectable impedance. See page 16.

No sound from Yamaha HTR-5990

You must be sure that you also have "audio" cables connected to the receiver to make this all work. As far as the TV is concerned, the same applies....accordianman
