Hi larryavent
The unit is going into protection mode. Check you speaker cabling and connections for short circuits and frayed ends. Best way to test for speaker or related problems is to disconnect the speaker wiring from the amp and try again. If it still has the symptoms with no cables connected then it will have an internal fault. Unless you have experience with this type of gear, there is not much that is user serviceable inside. A trip to a Yamaha Service center may be in order.

Graeme

As simple as this sounds, try hitting the speaker a/b button on the front of the unit, next to the headphone jack. I had the same problem, and was about to package the whole thing back up and go back to Best Buy when I hit this button and then the audio test worked.

Is it going into protect mode???
If so, check your speaker connections. Make sure there are no loose copper wires hanging out, and that your splices are clean at both the receiver and the speaker.
SOURCE: no compressed audio on hdmi
You probably need to take that issue up with the setup of the unnamed device originating the signal.
