Singer 648 has recently been cleaned, serviced. Has previously been winding bobbin fine, now it will not wind.

Be sure you are following the instructions completely. However, it sounds like there could have been a problem with the bobbin winding unit since you purchased it. You can probably take it for service--may be covered under warranty if it was just recently purchased.

However, there is also a standalone bobbin winder (Sidewinder) avlb from JoAnn's, Amazon, etc. for $30. They are usually battery and AC compatible. You can wind multiple bobbins quickly without having to unthread your machine and it saves wear n tear on your machine. Verify that your bobbins will work on the bobbin winder--some bobbins (mostly Singer) will not.

When you wind a bobbin, the thread usually goes through a "feeder" which creates a tiny bit of tension and a lot of direction. Make sure you have it through this. It is usually two circular discs, cupped, and back to back.

If you haven't cleaned and oiled your machine recently, you might start there. Consult your owner's manual, use ONLY fresh, good quality sewing machine oil, and apply 1-2 drops of oil each spot specified in the manual.

If the machine bobbin winder is still not working, does it still sew? If so, you probably have two choices:

1) Take it in for service
2) Buy a standalone bobbin winder (~$30) from JoAnn's, Hancocks, or Amazon.com

If the machine does not sew, take it for service.

The bobbin push button (button next to bobbin under the throat plate) must be in the sew position. When it is in the wind ( down to left) the machine will not sew. You need to push the button to the right to release it.
