Leaking washing machine

The washing machine often leaks badly both from the bottom of the detergent drawer and from the bottom of the door mostly when the machine is first switched on. The previous owners did not leave an instruction manual so I'm not sure if it's a basic problem or not. I also wonder if the filter needs cleaned as I have a dog and where do the hairs from blankets etc.go? Any help would be much appreciated.

TO FIX THIS PROBLEM I WOULD FIRST TAKE OUT THE SOAP DRAWER AND CHECK THE HOSE AND MAKE SURE IT IS NOT CLOGGED WITH WASHING POWDER AS IT CAN BECOME HARD AND BLOCK THE PIPE BY 50% ALSO CLEAN UNDERNEAT AND AROUND WHERE THE SOAP DRAWER SLIDES IN REGARDS UNDER THE DOOR MAKE SURE THAT THE RUBBER IS SPOTLESS AND SITTING PROPERLY .CLEAN UNDER THE DOOR AS WELL.

Water leaking from detergent drawer

The first thing to do is take note of what the washer is doing when water leaks out in order to help pinpoint the cause. Does it only leak when filling? Is it leaking during wash or rinses? Or is it leaking only when it goes into spin?

Only leaks when filling

  • Water pressure that's too strong. Some dispensers can't cope with high water pressure. Make sure the washer is level as one leaning forward can leak if combined with high water pressure. Try turning the tap on the washer down. Only suspect this if you know the water pressure is high and it looks like it's gushing in quite fast on fill
  • If there is an optional detergent flap fitted in the drawer for holding liquid detergent make sure it is removed or drawn into the up position if using powder otherwise it prevents detergent running down into the drum
  • A build up of grease and slime in the nozzles at the top of the dispenser where the water flows in causing water to spray at the front and run out when filling. Check this article -black jelly-like substance in soap dispenser and on soap drawer (In extreme cases I've had to replace the dispenser.)
  • A build up of undissolved detergent in the base of the soap dispenser under the drawer (depending on the design). Remove the soap drawer and check the bottom of the soap dispenser for a build up of detergent that could allow water to run over the lip of the dispenser
  • Blocked dispenser hose: Some washing machines can flood water out of the soap dispenser if the hose leading out of the dispenser into the tub gets blocked. Blockages can be something put into the drawer by a child or a chunk of undissolved detergent tablet. Indesit, and Candy, as well as some of the later Hoover washing machines suffered from this design flaw. The hose where the water is flushed down, was right at the front of the soap dispenser on these washing machines and it wasn't wide enough. Undissolved powder from a tablet or lumps of detergent through poor water pressure can block this hose solid causing water to back up. Unplug machine, remove lid and feel this hose carefully for obstructions.
  • Overfilling: If the washer starts to fill and never stops it will flood out of the drawer eventually - Washing machine overfills
Leaks out of drawer during the wash or rinse cycle
  • Too many suds? If you can see the door glass is white with foam up to the top it could be foaming out of the dispenser. Too much foam in the washing machine
  • Overfilling: If the washer starts washing but the water doesn't stop coming in it will eventually fill the drum so much it will start to pour out of the soap drawer and other places. If this is the fault you should be able to see the drum is so full of water it's making a different sound, maybe labouring under the load, and the door glass full to the top with water. You should also hear that water is still running into the machine and be able to detect it by opening the drawer. However, in most cases an over filling washing machine should trigger an error code long before it gets to this stage but if you suspect overfilling check this page - Washing machine overfills
  • Surging: There are (often intermittent) faults that can cause the motor to spin out of control on wash or rinses. Instead of turning slowly the fault causes the motor to surge into spin instead which throws the laundry and all the water about violently. Water can then be forced out of the soap dispenser drawer. This fault should be relatively rare these days but if you observe this behaviour call an engineer to diagnose the cause.
Leaks from drawer only when spinning
  • If it only comes out on spin it can be caused by a partial blockage preventing the water being pumped out fast enough resulting in excess water being thrown around on spin and backing up into the dispenser. This fault is similar to the surging fault described in the last list but different in that the problem only occurs when it's on a proper spin cycle and much of the water has been pumped away. Troubleshooting this fault is all about finding out why it isn't emptying the water properly which is usually due to a partial blockage. Follow the same troubleshooting as described for a washer not pumping any water out at all - Washing machine won't empty water
  • If water is being forced out of the drawer when the washer is spinning but it is on wash or rinse and shouldn't be spinning follow the procedure for surging in the previous section above

Suds leaking from detergent drawer on brand new Bosch washing machine

Use high efficiency detergent that s more concentrated. It uses MUCH lesser detergent VoLUME than conventional. The detergent has "He" letter on the bottle. And usually with FULl load it uses only about 150+-cc ( my cup is on 3marked level provided by the detergent bottle) Hope this helps! Robert Calgary, AB

I have a Miele W4840 front load washer and there is water leaking from the door. I've checked the seal and it doesn't seem to be damaged, but there is a definite leak. Please advise.

first make sure your detergent drawer is not popping open. water will run out from beneath the drawer, run over to the top of the door, run down the door, and then straight down to the floor. If you are not leaking out of the detergent drawer, the next thing down is the bottom of the glass door. look at the glass where it contacts the door seal at the bottom. It should be clean and smooth. Most likely you will find lint, hair, and soap residue. that needs to be cleaned off. any surface imperfections will cause a slow drip or trickle of water to come out of the lowest part of the door. If that is fine, and it is still leaking, open the cover to the drain pump on the bottom right of the front of the machine. Make sure that drain pump filter is tight. run the machine with that little drain access door open and see if you are leaking from there. If none of the above helps, and you are still getting water leaking from the door, miele has designed a new clamping ring for the door seal. Call them and make arrangements to have it replaced.

Hello there:
Here is a few tips that might help you out
Hope that they are very helpful for you
Best regards Mike
Washing machine is leaking Washing machine leaks are very common. There are many places a washing machine can leak from although most leaks come from the same few places. The most common cause for a leaking washing machine is the door seal. Door seals often get holes in them and water leaks down the inside of the washing machine which then runs out under the front. Water leaking down the front of the washing machine from the door can be caused by a worn door seal (the flange part that the door glass presses against when closed) or something trapped between the door seal and the door glass which breaks the seal. If the door seal doesn't look worn, or it's too young to be worn, then try cleaning the door seal's flange and the door glass on the inside of the door. Bits of cotton, un dissolved washing machine detergent etc can cause a leak.
Soap dispenser leaks
The next most common cause of a leaking washing machine is the soap dispenser. Leaking water from a soap dispenser is often caused by a blockage, or water pressure that is simply too high. Despite seeing many leaking soap dispensers, I've never seen a soap drawer with a seal, they just rely on water not getting to the front which is not really good enough. Some Hoover soap dispensers in particular, are renowned for leaking, and over the years Hoover have had to introduce modified soap dispensers twice.
Some washing machines, can flood water out of the soap dispenser when a hose gets blocked (usually with un dissolved soap powder) Indesit, and Candy, as well as some of the later Hoover washing machines suffered from this design flaw. The hose where the water is flushed down, was right at the front of the soap dispenser on these washing machines and the hose wasn't wide enough. Un dissolved powder from a tablet or lumps of detergent through poor hot water pressure can block this hose solid. (Note: water flooding out of the front of a washing machine's soap dispenser can also be an indication of overfilling or a partial pump blockage if it does it when spinning)
Finally, black gunge in the top of the soap dispenser can cause water to spray towards the front and leak. Take out the soap dispenser drawer and look at the roof of the soap dispenser. If it's covered in black gunge, blocking some of the water holes, it could be causing problems. In extreme cases I've had to replace the dispenser.
Tips for finding a leak on a washing machine
  • If you have a leaking washing machine, and you can't see where it's coming from, shove some newspaper underneath the washing machine. The slightest drop will give a clue where the water is leaking from. Pull the sheet out regularly to check for water leaks.
  • Water can run round things and drip onto other parts. Be careful with your diagnosis, as water dripping from a hose at the bottom could actually be leaking from somewhere else higher up.
  • Leaks usually leave marks, so it's possible to see something is leaking even without witnessing it. The soap suds that come out with the leaking water leave white trails. Rust is a good indicator of a water leak too. However, if you have had a previous leak cured, the "evidence" of a leak may still be present so be sure you don't blame a part that was repaired in the past.
  • If the washing machine leaks only at the end of the wash, when water is being pumped out. Make sure water isn't backing up and cascading over the top of a blocked drain pipe in the plumbing.
  • WARNING: Don't get electrocuted trying to witness a leak. It's dangerous running the washing machine with the top or back off.
