Hold the filter like a "V" and place the little nub on the bottom of the "V" inside the spout (arrow on the filter pointing towards the spout). Then wedge the top of the filter under the lip of the pot.

No. Can't happen. Have a Bosch. Always forget to add water before turning on, never ever went wrong. Even if I poured cold water into it 10 sec later. Take it back where you bought it and ask for a refund, or for another one. These are built to withstand these impacts. That's what I'd do for sure.
the filter holder has a small clip at the bottom. put the holder back in the kettle with the flat side against the kettle wall and slide down until the clip on the bottom engages in the metal holder on the kettle wall. It will clip into place and the filter can be reinserted into the holder. Without the holder in place covering the spout the automatic shutoff will not work and the kettle will boil dry.

A part of the problem may be from the water supply. Water with minerals builds up in the percolation area pinching off the flow. You can put a cup of water, a cup of white vinegar, and about a teaspoon of Epson salts in the kettle and try cycling it. If it gets through the cycle, dump the mixture in something temporary to save. If it short cycles, try letting it cool 15-30 minutes and cycle it again. Keep in mind this mixture will not hurt anyone, but you may want to heat a couple kettles with fresh water before making anything for your significant other. That is, if it unclogs. If it doesn't, can't hurt to let it sit an hour and try again. Chemical reaction will clear it usually eventually.
Depending on the age of your kettle and the amount of water that gets on "that" plug on the bottom from filling can take its toll on the contacts. They can usually be cleaned up, buy DO NOT HAVE IT PLUGGED IN, when this is done. The base has a spring loaded bezel with the outer contacts on the outer part of the circle. Take a couple of Popsicle sticks on opposite sides to depress the cover evenly. Look around the outer ring for copper wire contact and rub it a might with a flat point jewelers screw driver (a little bit), if it looks fonky. If not, don't bother it. On the inside in the same area there's a copper tube. Look it over. It can be rubbed on the same way with your little screw driver. If the contacts look reasonable, don't mess with'em. Don't mess with those contacts at all, if the light comes on every time you press the switch down. Good Luck.
To add to the previous post. The arrow goes on top and will be pointing towards you. Ensre the bottom notch is secure on the metal piece in the spout and the two notches will click in right under the metal lip which goes around the top of the kettle where you fill the kettle. You may have to play with it a little. It took me a bit to figure it out.
The_donalds, There is a slotted screw with a weird divider in the middle of the slot. I managed to twist it up with scissors, with the blades straddling the divider; then used pliers to get it open.
Your problem may be an incomplete circuit, which needs to be visually checked. Also, there are two screws that come loose easily, thereby blocking the circuit from completing when you push down on the on button. If this is your problem, you can just unbugger the screws, and leave em out.
