This was a while back and maybe you've fixed it already, but I just bought the same model and also only got background sound and no voices. Turned out it was because the sound was set to surround sound. There are instructions of how to change sound to Stereo in the back of the instruction booklet - go into setup - audio - speaker setup - down mix - change to stereo.

Dvd player spoken dialog volume becomes difficult to hear over background sound

Some sets have a setting called "hall" which if engaged the background noise will be louder than people close up talking, I do not know what TV you are using but look at its options for audio and Hall etc first, its possible the player may have that or something like that also in its menu---by the way, have you confirmed this player has this issue on another set?

When i play a dvd, the voices are muted. But all the background noise plays??

Hello, all of the vocals are supposed to be coming from your center speaker,it may be turned off(check the units menu) speaker might be disconnected.,volume might be set too low as each speaker has a individual volume control in the menu.

Emerson dvd player - background sound lauder than dialogue

Greetings surfjax,

If you will allow me to make an assumption, you do not have a 5.1 surround system connected to your DVD player. This is a common experience with users of a standard TV or stereo receiver if a movie is being presented in 5.1.

In a surround sound system the center channel speaker provides almost all the vocal tracks while the side channels will provide music and some background noises. You'll still be able to hear the voices in your side speakers, but it will be muted and over powered by music or sound effects.

Some DVD players allow you to "Downmix" the surround signal to stereo. You might want to look around your sound setup on the DVD player or check your owners manual.

Hope this helps.

Lead vocal

There's a multiplex button (MPX maybe) on the left front of the player. By hitting it you get leads only, background only or both. Be sure, though, you have a multiplex CD. Otherwise you'll only have background and no lead. I learned the hard way. Watch or scan for multiplex or lead vocals. Good luck...
