Most likely culprit is the high voltage rectifier. These are epoxy encased, and do emit a pretty good odor when they short.

Yes it is definitely the magnetron and yes you could change it your self if you are good with electronics and tools (considering that the MAGNETRON DRIVER CIRCUIT is OK) but it is normally cheaper to buy a new microwave oven
